Elliott Ripper House / Christopher Polly Architect. Architects: Christopher Polly Architect Location: Rozelle, Sydney, Australia Builder: Paul King Pty Ltd Structural Engineer: Simpson Design Associates Landscape Architect: Carmichael Studios Area: 161 sqm Completion: 2011 Photographs: Brett Boardman The project simply and directly extrapolates existing formal qualities in plan and section, with extension of key existing materials and finishes to retain some memory of its previous incarnation – while providing a significantly expanded series of connected interior volumes that harness access to sunlight, ventilation and views of tree canopies, sky and district beyond.

The design strategy entails: 1. Fine steel plate elements contrast an age-old weatherboard cladding profile and large expanses of shallow pocket fixed glass and western red cedar externally sliding doors & pivoting windows offer varying degrees of openness and enclosure. Surrendered floor space enables delight in a sculpted expanded stair void and cantilevered balcony. The University of the West of Scotland / RMJM. Skim Milk: K-House by Hugo Kohno Architect Associates. Located in Komazawa, Tokyo, K-House is one of Hugo Kohno Architect Associates latest works. Acting like a thermos, the construction of the home takes into account insulated heating and cooling. Large windows are placed co-linear to the edge of the building to let in ample sunlight. The glass on the windows are heat-reflective, and use a high-performance thermal barrier.

The two-storey building also has a staircase leading to the rooftop’s private terrace. The windows are strategically placed to allow enough sunlight to brighten the interior, but maintain sufficient privacy as well. I love how the sophisticated simplicity of the exterior is only a preface to the elegant and dynamic aesthetic of the interior. Mercer Street Loft by DHD Architecture and Design. Located on a lower floor in SoHo, the Mercer Street Loft, designed by DHD Architecture and Design, blends original features with modern design to create a cohesive space. The original floors and tin ceiling bring warmth to the large open space. While the loft has a row of large street-facing windows, the overall space gets limited natural light. To allow light and air to flow throughout, partial height walls were added.

Despite the fact that it’s a loft space, the layout establishes room definition with furniture placement. The owner has an assorted mix of art and found objects that work well together by being thoughtfully placed around the loft. The white walls showcase each piece, as well as the furnishings, and make them stand out. The original cast iron columns were stripped and add a nice detail, especially the one in the corner of the kitchen. Architect: Jill Diamant of DHD Architecture and Design. Photos by Bjorg Magnea. Belgian architecture firm dmvA designed Extension vB4 as an addition for an A-frame vacation home located in Brecht, Belgium. Dealing with strict building regulations, the firm was able to design the modern trapezoid-like form while still respecting the original design. They created a new entrance, library, and bathroom that merge well with the existing space by having a predominantly white interior.

The front and the back of the house feature large windows allowing views of the garden and pond. The front part has a movable partition wall that blocks site of the street.
