iRock: The World's First Power-Generating iPad Rocking Chair. This chair makes me want to sing “I wanna rock right now” really loudly (from Rob Base’s song “It Takes Two“) and I have the Zurich-based Micasa Lab to thank for that. They developed the iRock, a traditional looking rocking chair with the ability to charge your iPad (or iPhone) just by simply rocking back and forth.

The chair has a dock that your iPad sits in so you can conveniently control the music you’re rocking out to, along with built-in speakers. The design, powered by a generator that converts the movement into power, makes it possible to listen and charge your Apple devices at the same time. Make A Thing: Cassette Tape Wallets. 20 Clever Science Museum Ads. EmailEmail In order to show that science can be fun, Science World museum and Rethink Canada created a series of smart ambient ads showing various fun facts on the streets of Vancouver. One of their most notable ads was the 6000$ worth of billboard, covered in 2 oz of pure gold and guarded by two round-the-clock guards. This actually served two purposes: besides inviting people to come and see the “Treasure!” Exhibition, the billboard would also teach you, that “2 oz of gold are just enough to cover an entire billboard”.

When most of us were growing up, we learned about a handful of man-made wonders of the world such as the pyramids in Egypt, the Colosseum in Rome, and the Great Wall of China. One that may have slipped right past you could have been the Kailashnath Temple in Maharashtra, India. What's most amazing about the Kailashnath Temple is that it's carved out of one single rock. Carvers started at the top and excavated downward, exhuming the temple out of the existing rock. The traditional methods were rigidly followed by the master architect, which could not have been achieved by excavating from the front. Dedicated to Hindu Lord Shiva, the temple was built between 756-774 CE by the Rashtrakuta king Krishna I and measures about 60 feet tall and 200 feet wide.

Over 100 men with the wildest whiskers entered the 2012 European Beard and Moustache Championships in Wittersdorf, France over this past weekend. The entrants curled their mustaches and brushed their beards, adorning their faces with eccentric designs, stiffened and maintained by intense primping, styling, and blow drying.

Whether you like a man with facial hair or not, you've got to commend these guys on their creative efforts. These images from the competition give us a peek into the world of facial hairstyling that seems all at once fun, wacky, and labor-intensive. It brings to mind film director Morgan Spurlock's documentary titled Mansome, which touches on the art of hair design, both facial and body, amongst men.

Via [Telegraph, ntvmsnbc] An Insider's Look at Space Shuttle Flight Decks. As of late, an interest in space exploration has risen and we're discovering more and more astounding photography of our incredible vessels that make the journey possible. Last month, we brought you the incredible photos of America's Space Shuttle Program by Dan Winters and today we're pleased to share photographer Ben Cooper's series of images, giving us some insight on the inner workings of some spacecrafts.

Cooper's series, simply known as Flight Decks, takes us inside three space shuttles—Endeavour, Atlantis, and Discovery. The photos in this series reveal the intense technology that astronauts have to work with. Video games make it seem like fun and games to pilot a rocket-launched vehicle, but it clearly involves a lot more knowledge than simply steering around with a joystick. Prints of Cooper's insider's look at space shuttles can be purchased through his website. Ben Cooper website via [Ian Brooks] 18 Creative Elevator Ads. I’ve always been interested in finding ways to connect design with other communities, and I’m happy to find a musician who is as into home design as I am.

I connected with musician, performer, DJ and songwriter Hesta Prynn (aka Julie Potash) on Twitter and was thrilled to find that she’s as obsessed with art and design as the rest of us. She told me about the makeover she’d done in her Tudor City apartment, and I was dying to see what the rest of it looked like. So Max and I packed up our photo gear and headed over to Tudor City, which we both agreed was Manhattan’s version of Hogwarts. Julie’s fiance has lived in their apartment for years, and she recently moved in, slowly making changes to integrate her style with his.

Max and I were obsessed with the heavy steel doors throughout their home. 1:Face Watch Gives Back. When good design meets a good cause, I can’t help but be happy. So when the 1:Face Watch hit my desk, I was delighted to see that they don’t just talk a good game, they back it up with actual donations to six charities they support. The watch comes in six colors, each color representing a cause that part of the purchase price will go to including: poverty, cancer, environment, water, AIDS, and breast cancer. For example, if you buy one white watch, it feeds 16 children, while 625 yellow watches build one well in Rwanda. Pretty amazing. The squared-off mirror faces remain blank until you press the button to display the time.

Simple and sleek.
