Surreal Sculptures of Disintegrating Animals. Tomohiro Inaba is a creative sculptor who produces eye-catching figures that look like they are disintegrating into thin air.

The Japanese artist's steel sculptures titled Promise of Our Star and Next to the World are particularly effective in the visual illusion. Each figure offers a duality that lies somewhere between solid sculpture and three dimensional scribbles. In one piece, viewers are presented with a grazing fawn, while the other displays a leaping deer. Both creatures have solid footing on the ground but extend beyond that point into a chaotic entwinement of wires. Though the fawn is half-way through its disappearing act, the active deer seems to have only just begun its disintegration process.

My Modern Metropolis Mirrored Reflections Produce Beautifully Complex Landscapes American photographer and director of photography Cody William Smith mirrors the world upon itself in these contemplative landscapes. The series, entitled A Moment's Reflection, features a large, round mirror placed conspicuously into the dirt, the sand, or the sea in various settings. Standing upright and partially buried, the mirror interrupts the typical landscape with a reflection of another space located nearby.

The beautiful arrangements create a harmonious balance of multiple realities connecting in unexpected ways. Smith says, "My intention is to draw new connections between familiar forms by introducing specular reflections to environments where none would typically exist. Hauntingly Beautiful Clothing Frozen in Blocks of Ice. As much of the United States continues to experience an insanely cold winter, many artists are making the most of it by documenting spectacular icicles dripping from a frozen lighthouse or by transforming boiling water into a cloud of tiny ice crystals. Environmental artist Nicole Dextras regularly uses ice as her medium to create unique sculptures where various textures and fabrics are set within thick blocks. IceShifts is an ongoing collection of smaller projects in which Dextras suspends items including shirts, pants, socks, and dresses in frozen water and photographs the deconstructed garments in surrounding landscapes.

There is something incredibly spooky about how the pieces of clothing stand upright without an owner. Dextras says, "Although frozen in time, the garments appear to dance, simultaneously forming and deforming, like unmasked shape shifters. Sean Kelly gallery in New York is presenting an impressive new body of work by photographer Frank Thiel that shows the massive glacial ice formations in Patagonia, Argentina. The show, called Nowhere is a Place, takes its name from a book co-written by Bruce Chatwin and Paul Theroux in 1992 about their impressions of the South American region.

Thiel first visited Patagonia 15 years ago and then felt compelled to return, both in 2011 and 2012, to take these awe-inspiring images. He captures the majestic beauty of the Perito Moreno Glacier, a hotspot tourist attraction due to its massive size. The glacier is 18-miles long and 3-miles wide with an average height of 240 ft above the surface of the water and a depth that can reach over 550 feet. Interestingly, it is only one of three Patagonian glaciers that is not retreating, rather it's in a state of equilibrium—neither advancing nor retreating. Hero-glyphics by josh lane. Jan 10, 2014 hero-glyphics by josh lane hero-glyphics by josh lane designer and illustrator josh lane told us more about his hero-glyphics series. avengers like most of the work I do, this series was self initiated. I wanted to pay tribute to this style by adding a modern twist of the things I love – which tend to be on the geeky side. when I started the project I knew I wanted to mimic the same kind of poses that early egyptians had established. I enjoyed placing these modern characters into the poses that fit the character best. for example, I felt like captain kirk should be the one sitting on the ‘throne’ as if it were his captains chair and that in the x-men piece I would have wolverine kneeling before the representation of the most powerful mutant entity, the phoenix. x men spider man power rangers star trek teenage mutant ninja turtles kick ass prints along with tees, totes, pillows, etc. can be found at society6 and bza. via juxtapoz andy butler I designboom.

Beautiful Photos of Frozen Lighthouses on Lake Michigan. My Modern Metropolis Beautiful Photos of Frozen Lighthouses on Lake Michigan With the winter chill in high gear, photographer Thomas Zakowski has captured some beautiful images of frozen lighthouses to reflect just how cold temperatures can get. The photographer's spectacular shots reveal a lesser seen vision of lighthouses on Lake Michigan, each having been hit with waves of water that have succumb to the frigid temperatures, crystallizing in place.

The almost haunting images are unbelievable examples of bitter cold weather. Though, with the US facing a polar vortex this week, it's easy for many Americans to believe each visually stunning image in Zakowski's collection. Traced with icicles, each 30-foot structure is transformed into a sort of frozen beast, yearning for warmer days. Miniature Batman Takes a Soul-Searching Journey Through Texas. EmailEmail In what might be a darker and more existential take on the popular children’s movie Toy Story, photographer Remi Noël has created a series of images of his trip through Texas featuring a plastic Batman action figure as his only companion.

It all began when Noël took his son’s toy along with him so he’d feel less lonely on his solo trips to the U.S. Then he decided to take pictures of Batman as well. The whimsical yet depressing images portray a Batman toy that seems to be lost in thought, sounding the depths of his soul or pondering the meaning of life. The photographer has always been interested in the idea of a “timeless America,” which is what drew him to Texas. Website: reminoel.com. What I Be Project is a powerful portrait series by photographer Steve Rosenfield that features individuals who have bravely opted to bear their insecurities on their bodies.

Hundreds of people have already participated in the ongoing project, revealing a wide range of issues they have with themselves. Whether it be a physical, mental, or social insecurity, each person brands their face and body with words that have scarred them. The collection of images, though simple in their composition, offer plenty of food for thought. While one young man's arm is stamped with "TOO SKINNY" another has "YOU'RE TOO BIG FOR THIS RIDE" etched on his hand. Each struggles with his size, despite being on opposite ends of the spectrum. Rosenfield states: "In today’s society, we are told to look or act a certain way. EmailEmail As an artist, you get many strange ideas to cross your mind everyday. Blowing bubbles outside at minus 9-12 degrees Celsius?

Why not! Knowing the process couldn’t disappoint, one beautiful winter morning Washington-based photographer Angela Kelly took her son outside to blow bubbles and shoot some amazing pictures, which she later titled as Frozen in a Bubble. “We blew the bubbles across the top of our frozen patio table and also upon the hood of my car and then we watched in awe as each individual bubble froze with their own unique patterns,” said Kelly to KOMO News. The means Kelly used for making bubbles were very simple: dish soap, karo syrup and water. Source: Angel Kelly website | Facebook | Etsy (via: komonews) Christmas Tree Made of Sledges / Hello Wood. From a distance, it would seem a traditional Christmas tree has been erected in front of the Palace of Arts in Budapest.

But upon closer inspection, a surprise is revealed- the tree is made up of 365 sledges. Designed by Hello Wood, an architecture and design studio based out of Hungary, the 11 meter tree will eventually be disassembled and the sledges given to the kids of SOS Children’s Village. Read more about the installation after the break… Hello Wood, a Hungarian studio known for their social awareness and original approach, decided to change the normal idea of a Christmas present with their tree design. The tree was built in just a week, and allows space for visitors to come inside and experience the tree.

The tree is safe from heavy winter winds with a base weighing over four and a half tons. “We were thinking a lot about what the secret of an original Christmas decoration is. The Christmas Tree installation goes beyond art, activating social space to also give back. Surreal Images of Faceless Men Stuck Between Two Worlds. My Modern Metropolis Surreal Images of Faceless Men Stuck Between Two Worlds Photographer Christopher Ryan McKenney plays with the visibility of men in nature, masking their faces in draped cloth or removing their heads entirely. Each surreal image depicts an incomplete man who appears to be in the process of either materializing or disappearing into thin air.

Mystery surrounds the figure in each frame, which can strangely be seen within a physical frame in several instances. Though these men seem to be unrelated to one another, they share a sense of escape and a level of discomfort that keeps them hidden from sight. Deep in the remote woods, these disembodied and veiled figures are trapped somewhere in between two worlds, facing their own personal struggles. McKenney says of his image featuring a man with a lampshade over his head: "This picture represents people having ideas but covering them up in fear of failure or what other people will think.
