TIME magazine recently revealed its 30 Must-See Tumblr Blogs which includes the highly creative, user-generated Newspaper Blackout.

Creating Remarkable Poetry Through Subtraction

This blog is the brainchild of Austin-based artist and writer Austin Kleon. The main objective of the Tumblr is to display poetry through the omission of words in already printed text. Essentially, it is poetry by way of censorship, executed with the aid of a black sharpie. Taking published works in the form of newspaper articles, novels, and even horoscopes, this style of "blackout poetry" reveals only carefully selected words to create a new, shorter composition of expression. Often, the poems produced offer a sense of hope and inspiration. If you're interested in keeping a collection of the blackout poetry on hand, there is a book inspired by the blog by the same title, Newspaper Blackout, on sale. The set of aluminum surveillance cameras hanging from the ceiling convey a Big Brother feeling and extend the idea of surveillance inside, where the protective space is transformed into a constant reminder of everyday life. This impressive light fixture was inspired by the designer’s earlier version of this product, the Surveillance Light. The Swedish and German designers of Human since 1982 uniquely craft each piece by hand, creating a connection to each client that will end up with one of these modern chandeliers. Each featuring 5 to 6 cameras, the chandeliers can be exhibited in many different commercial or residential spaces. Bed 42 Combines Desk & Flexibly Minimalist Mattress Zone. New York in the 1980′s

Photo: Steven Siegel. As I watched Ghost for the first time not too long ago, not only did I begin to realize why Patrick Swayze’s passing shook the Western world so forcefully, but I saw the hilarious and paranormal events of the film unfold in a New York—albeit a wildly fictional one— that I had never known. It was a New York in which you could be an artist and own a spacious loft in a cast-iron high-rise downtown. It was also a New York with seedy, desolate neighborhoods in what are now well-beyond-gentrified areas of Manhattan, and gun-toting criminals could be hiding in any alleyway, ready to finish a job (spoiler alert for anyone?). Well, spotted on Gothamist today are incredible photographs from Steven Siegel documenting New York in the 80’s, images that can only leave a generation that did not grow up with Patrick Swayze in disbelief.
