Ken Robinson: How to escape education's death valley. Non-Muslims Carried Out More than 90% of All Terrorist Attacks on U.S. Soil. An FBI report shows that only a small percentage of terrorist attacks carried out on U.S. soil between 1980 and 2005 were perpetrated by Muslims. Princeton University’s Loon Watch compiled the following chart from the FBI’s data (as explained below, this chart is over-simplified … and somewhat inaccurate): Terrorist Attacks on U.S. Soil by Group, From 1980 to 2005, According to FBI Database According to this data, there were more Jewish acts of terrorism within the United States than Islamic (7% vs 6%).

These radical Jews committed acts of terrorism in the name of their religion. These were not terrorists who happened to be Jews; rather, they were extremist Jews who committed acts of terrorism based on their religious passions, just like Al-Qaeda and company. (The chart is misleading in several ways. U.S. Wired reported the same month: We agree. Kurzman told the Young Turks in February that Islamic terrorism “doesn’t even count for 1 percent” of the 180,000 murders in the US since 9/11. Empire - Fuelling geopolitics: The oil saga. Canada and science: NRC will now only do science that promotes “economic gain”.

Science is not about the bottom line. Photo by NRC, modified by Phil Plait Over the past few years, the Canadian government has been lurching into antiscience territory. For example, they’ve been muzzling scientists , essentially censoring them from talking about their research. Scientists have fought back against this , though from what I hear with limited success. But a new development makes the situation appear to be far worse. In a stunning announcement, the National Research Council—the Canadian scientific research and development agency—has now said that they will only perform research that has “social or economic gain” . This is not a joke. John MacDougal, President of the NRC, literally said , “Scientific discovery is not valuable unless it has commercial value”. I had to read the article two or three times to make sure I wasn’t missing something, because I was thinking that no one could possibly utter such colossally ignorant statements.

This is monumentally backwards thinking. Boston bombing breaking news: Don’t watch cable. Shut off Twitter. You’d be better off cleaning your gutters. Submitted by Michael Snyder of The Economic Collapse blog, The world is heading into a horrific economic nightmare, and an inordinate amount of the suffering is going to fall on innocent children. If you want to get an idea of what America is going to look like in the not too distant future, just check out what is happening in Greece. At this point, Greece is experiencing a full-blown economic depression. As I have written about previously, the unemployment rate in Greece has now risen to 27 percent, which is much higher than the peak unemployment rate that the U.S. economy experienced during the Great Depression of the 1930s.

And as you will read about below, child hunger is absolutely exploding in Greece right now. Some families are literally trying to survive on pasta and ketchup. But don't think for a moment that it can't happen here. Sadly, the truth is that child hunger is already rising very rapidly in our poverty-stricken cities. Don't think that it can't happen. The document also indicates that Jobs had a Top Secret government security clearance while working at Pixar. One interviewee remarked on Jobs' well-known drug use -- which included, by his own admission, the use of LSD during his schooldays. Others mentioned that Jobs couldn't be trusted and that he was able to create a reality-distortion field. "Several individuals questioned Mr. The 191-page FBI file (.pdf) was released following a Freedom of Information Act request by Wired and other media outlets after the death of Steve Jobs on 5 October 2011. 'Marijuana cannon' used to fire drugs over US border seized in Mexico | World news.

The 'marijuana cannon' seized in Mexicali on Tuesday, which uses an old car engine to generate compressed air. Photograph: AP Police in the border city of Mexicali say they have recovered a powerful improvised cannon used to hurl packets of marijuana across a border fence into California. Police told the Televisa network that the device was made up of a plastic pipe and a crude metal tank that used compressed air from the engine of an old car. The apparatus fired cylinders packed with drugs that weighed as much as 13 kilos, police said. It was confiscated last week after US officers told Mexican police that they had been confiscating a large number of drug packages that appeared to have been fired over the border.

By Tom Leonard Published: 01:19 GMT, 14 January 2013 | Updated: 14:33 GMT, 22 January 2013 Emancipator? : Lincoln, featuring Daniel Day-Lewis, is wowing critics, but historians say the film gives the 16th President far too much credit for his role in ending slavery The film currently taking America by storm begins with a black Union cavalryman pausing from the slaughter of the Civil War to recite the Gettysburg Address by heart as the president who gave it trudges past through the mud. And it ends with Abraham Lincoln in quiet triumph, his work done in seeing slavery banned throughout the nation, and the Confederacy of the American South brought to its knees. Breaking off from a discussion with colleagues about giving blacks the vote, Uncle Abe — played by Daniel Day-Lewis — heads off to a night at the theatre with Mrs Lincoln, and a fateful encounter with assassin John Wilkes Booth.

Lincoln is not a movie about Reconstruction, of course; it’s a movie about old white men in beards and wigs heroically working together to save grateful black people. Steven Spielberg and Tony Kushner’s Lincoln is about Obama, we are told, or don’t need to be told. It is about the triumph of a political compromiser, and it argues that radical change comes about by triangulation, by back-room deals, and by a willingness to forego ideological purity. Kushner has said this quite explicitly, not only likening his Lincoln to Obama, but arguing that there are general principles to be drawn from it; “too much impatience can make it impossible for anything to happen,” he said, in response to Chris Hayes’ question about whether the movie favors moderates over radicals. It is, in short, a barely veiled argument that radicals should get in line, be patient, be realistic.

It does this in several ways. But, of course, we’re not. W.E.B.
