Old Japanese Maps On Google Earth Unveil Secrets

TOKYO — When Google Earth added historical maps of Japan to its online collection last year, the search giant didn't expect a backlash. The finely detailed woodblock prints have been around for centuries, they were already posted on another Web site, and a historical map of Tokyo put up in 2006 hadn't caused any problems. But Google failed to judge how its offering would be received, as it has often done in Japan. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/05/02/old-japanese-maps-on-goog_n_195277.html

Apartment Therapy Unplugged | Best Prank Ever? Real-Life Dead Pixel in Google Earth

Dead Pixels are annoying little dark bits you'll see on your screen when a bunch of teeny tiny subpixels are permanently off. It might be a broken transistor or just a pixel that's stuck on black. Or if you're messing around with Google Earth, it might be an 82-centimeter by 82-centimeter square of burnt grass. We're not sure which came first: Either this guy was playing with Google Earth and had a "Wouldn't it be cool if..." moment, or he's just a pyromaniac with a flair for the geometric who likes to exhibit his work on Google Earth.

I occasionally check to see what leads people to this website – what search terms they are using to find me, or what sites link to this one. Lately I’ve gotten lots of hits from search engines with people trying to find out how to embed Google Earth into Powerpoint. I had posted something a couple of months ago about how to do the opposite, embed Powerpoint slides into Google , and I guess that’s why the search terms kept bringing up my site. Seeing these repeated hits made me wonder if there was a way to do this, and I think I’ve found a solution, albeit not as elegant as I might like. http://www.randomconnections.com/adding-google-earth-to-powerpoint/

Map the Fallen

http://www.mapthefallen.org/ This Memorial Day I would like to share with you a personal project of mine that uses Google Earth to honor the more than 5,700 American and Coalition servicemen and women that have lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan. I have created a map for Google Earth that will connect you with each of their stories—you can see photos, learn about how they died, visit memorial websites with comments from friends and families, and explore the places they called home and where they died. This work first began while I was a graduate student in Environmental Science at U.C.

At first glance, you could be forgiven for thinking that those aliens who are supposedly responsible for crop circles have now learned to spell. However, far from being the work of little green men, this alphabet of Britain has been collected by 25-year- old Rachel Young after selecting the images from a Google map of aerial photographs of the country. So, a giant A is part of a forest in Leigh in Kent, a massive B makes an appearance in Weston-on-the-Green in Oxfordshire and the C suddenly surfaces in Normanton on the Wolds, Nottinghamshire. Incapacitated and laid up in her home in Ossett, West Yorkshire, she decided to hunt down perfect images representing all 26 letters of the alphabet. 'I thought it would be a nice way to celebrate our country,' she says.

Top 10 Google Earth Finds

Columbus and Magellan had it rough. Exploration these days is quite literally an armchair activity, as high-resolution satellite images and tools like Google Earth make it possible for anyone with an Internet connection to pore over the globe with a fine-toothed comb. There are entire online communities devoted to finding and cataloging the most unusual locales worldwide, creating 21st century atlases of minutiae. It isn't just for hobbyists, either — Google Earth has helped scientists find previously unknown ruins and police locate clandestine marijuana fields. Here are 10 of the most unusual discoveries.
