This new B2B service by Sprint comes on the heels of the acquisition of Hugues Telematics ( read here ) by Sprint’s competitor Verizon Wireless.

It sounded great and innovative at first sight, but the more I looked at it the less I find it sustainable in the long run. Whether they want it or not these app stores are de facto competing with mobile app stores. Consumers have embraced app stores on their smartphones because of the large choice and the low price of apps.

8 Mobile Geo-Location Application Types

While geo-location aka Location-Based Service (LBS) apps are a fairly new category in the mobile space, it’s already hard to keep track of the dozens available and still growing. Instead of looking at each an every mobile app which has some element of geo-data, we have a quick look in the post at some of the subcategories available, a few of which we’ve already covered at SocialTimes or in some cases our sister site AllFacebook. The following list is by no means an exhaustive one of LBS app types, only a sampling. Note that some example apps might actually fall into several categories but are only listed once. ESCORT, Cobra Release Community-Based Systems to Prevent U.S. Drivers Against Speed Traps

0 in Share ESCORT Live This week, only apart from a few days the two leading North American vendors of radar/laser detection systems have announced community sharing features for their respective devices.
0 in Share Speed camera warning devices and apps vendor Coyote System today said it currently gathers more than 10 Billion speed measurements (GPS probes) per year, a raw data that has become over the last few years a key component of real-time traffic . The company currently provides these probe data in real-time to traffic information suppliers such as INRIX, NAVTEQ, Mediamobile, ViaMichelin and Infotrafic. "Among our portfolio of data sources, Coyote Systems is a valuable contributor to our V-Trafic traffic intelligence platform" said Vincent Godec, CEO of Mediamobile. http://www.gpsbusinessnews.com/Coyote-We-Collect-10-Billion-GPS-Probes-Per-Year_a3700.html

Coyote: “We Collect 10 Billion GPS Probes Per Year“

If it wasn’t obvious before, it’s crystal clear today. The dedicated portable GPS device is dead, with Apple and Google playing pallbearer to Garmin, Magellan and TomTom’s hardware businesses. Between last week’s hastily organized Google Maps event , where the search giant showed off a new interface, new features and — most importantly for Android users – offline map downloading, and Apple’s new Maps app announcement at WWDC , a dedicated device for mapping and navigation comes across as superfluous. Or even worse, incredibly low-tech.
