Your Brain Evolved from Bacteria. Biomes. Scientists divide the world into large natural areas called biomes.

Biomes

Desert and rainforest biomes are two that you’ve probably heard of. Each biome is known for certain kinds of plants and animals. But what’s really at the heart of a biome is its climate. How hot or cold is it? How much rain and snow fall every year? Climate is critical because it determines the types of plants and animals—the ecosystem—that can survive in a biome. Humans have invented ways to deal with extreme climates and live in every biome. Let’s say you flew in a plane from the North Pole to the South Pole, zigzagging over all the continents—and let’s say there were no clouds blocking your view. The land areas of the Earth can be divided into eight major biomes: tundra, taiga, temperate deciduous forest, temperate grassland (steppe), Mediterranean (chaparral), desert, tropical savanna, and tropical rain forest. Science for Kids: Tundra Biome.

The tundra biome is a cold and treeless plain where harsh conditions make it hard for plants and animals alike to survive.

Science for Kids: Tundra Biome

Around 20% of the Earth's land surface is covered with tundra. Characteristics of the Tundra Biome It's cold - The tundra is the coldest of the biomes. The average temperature in the tundra is around -18 degrees F. It gets much colder in the winter and warmer during its short summer. Tundra Seasons The tundra has two distinct seasons: a long winter and a short summer.

The winter lasts around 8 months and is extremely cold. The summer is shorter and is marked by the other extreme of the sun not setting. What is permafrost? Permafrost is a layer of ground below the topsoil that remains frozen throughout the year. Plants in the Tundra Plants that grow in the tundra include grasses, shrubs, herbs, and lichens. Most of the plants in the tundra are perennials that come back each year from the same root. Animals in the Tundra Facts about the Tundra Biome Back to Kids Study Page. KDE Santa Barbara. It is also quite big. The tundra covers about one fifth of the land on earth. The word tundra comes from a Finnish word that means treeless plain, which is a good description of the biome. Tundra biome is located in the artic circle, which is a circle that surrounds the north pole, but this is not the only place we can find freezing cold temperatures and a few animals.
