The work, the topic of a discussion series at the museums, is also a favorite of the museums’ Elizabeth and John Moors Cabot Director Martha Tedeschi. Turner The work depicts a nighttime view of the River Thames from Millbank, near the current location of Tate Britain, with a low moon glinting on the water and silhouetting buildings, trees, and boats. Moving almost every summer to a nearby coastal town, he often worked between 9 and 11 pm in order to precisely capture the unique atmosphere of the summer nights. I chose this work to follow on from yesterday's past posts which were focused on light. And in this painting light is an essential element. I have provided two analyses of the painting for your interest. At first this painting appears as a charming moonlight scene with a whimisical tone. But look carefully and you see that all is not well.
