Verybody seem to agree on the fact that the World is complex and is getting even more complex everyday.

Why designers should seek chaos and complexity first - Activeside of design

I wouldn't discuss that, it's probably true. It seems that everyone also agrees on the fact that Simple is better than Complex and that we need simplicity in the products (material or immaterial) and services we use everyday. Probably also true. Now, when the subject touches to Design, everyone seems to have a strong opinion too on how to obtain Simplicity: just by avoiding Complexity, right? That, I will discuss. "Ideas are cheap and plentiful" Laws of Simplicity - Filed under 'laws' Organization makes a system of many appear fewer.

Laws of Simplicity - Filed under 'laws'

The home is usually the first battleground that comes to mind when facing the daily challenge of managing complexity. Stuff just seems to multiply. There are three consistent strategies for achieving simplicity in the living realm: 1) buy a bigger house, 2) put everything you don’t really need into storage, or 3) organize your existing assets in a systematic fashion. These typical solutions have mixed results.

At first, a larger home lowers the clutter to space ratio. Concealing the magnitude of clutter, either through spreading it out or hiding it, is an unnuanced approach that is guaranteed to work by the first Law of reduce. However, in the long term an effective scheme for organization is necessary to achieve definitive success in taming complexity. 02 NES ContentFramework.006.jpg / Nescafe Content Strategy — Activeside Projects. Playing with Lego helps you create better websites, apparently. Can playing with Lego help you design better websites?

Playing with Lego helps you create better websites, apparently

A new, entirely serious, document from a Swiss team claims it can. URL – User Requirements with Lego is a process that creative teams can go through to help work out the best ways of communicating online. Why Lego? Apparently because it’s simple to use; is known by most people; offers shapes and colours to aid with inspiration; can be built into simple or complex forms and is used in many different cultures. The process is based on an official Lego initiative called Serious Play, which looks to get all kinds of businesses using Lego to enhance their innovation and performance. The idea is that teams working on an online project get together for 3 to 4 hours, for a session led by an expert in URL.

After a few warmup exercises that see participants building their dream or nightmare colleague and competing to build the tallest tower they can out of Lego, participants have to take part in a range of tasks.

Fellows.
