Wagner and J. Rod Franklin | From the Quarter 4 2008 issue Logistics service providers (LSPs) often struggle to extend customized solutions created for specific customers to a broader customer base. What they need is a new model for managing the innovation process. Innovation is difficult for any organization to control. This has proved to be especially difficult for logistics service providers (LSPs).
Other industries have benefited from using a structured review and approval process to control innovation. This article proposes that LSPs can strategically channel their innovation efforts by using formal tools and processes for capturing field-based knowledge and a "platform and toolkit" approach to innovation management. Why is innovation important? However, the innovation output of most LSPs is generally on a rather low level. Why is it important for LSPs to innovate? The lack of innovation should also be of concern to shippers.

Due to the wide variety of shipments in the uShip marketplace, it is necessary to distill every transaction down to measures of price, weight and distance. We express the price of each shipment in terms of US$ per ton-mile. Every month, we calculate the weighted average of these prices across all of our domestic (US) shipments to determine the overall TPI number for that month.
The nature of transportation services varies widely across categories; therefore, pricing (in terms of US$ per ton-mile) can be very different from one category to the next. It is important to note that the overall TPI number represents a weighted average for our categories, which is a different category mix than the overall US economy.
