Balance was assessed and all standardized differences were below 0.10, indicating good balance (Additional file 2: Table S1). Mean age of WNV infected subjects was 49.1 ± 18.4 years, 778 (50.5%) were female and 61 (4.0%) resided in rural areas in Ontario (Table 3). The median CADG score was 6.0 and 360 (23.4%) of infected patients were among the highest income quintile. Unmatched infected subjects (n = 11) were younger than matched, infected subjects (mean age, 40.1 ± 14.8 years) and more likely to reside rurally. Surveillance of WNv included testing of corvids found dead and reported by citizens across Ontario, which at the time was a novel citizen science application for disease surveillance. While this surveillance program was successful for the timely identification of WNv as it emerged and spread across the province, it is important to consider the influence of non-disease factors on surveillance data collected by the public.

The objective of this study was to examine associations between rates of citizen phone reports of dead corvids and sociodemographic factors within the geographic areas where the reports were obtained. Il faut remonter à 2012 pour trouver la pointe précédente et, encore là, les données étaient beaucoup plus modestes avec 134 cas répertoriés et cinq décès. Les autorités de santé publique ignorent toutefois la cause de cette poussée. Il n'y a pas d'explication précise, malheureusement. Il y a des années où le nombre de cas chez l'humain augmente beaucoup et d'autres années où il y a très peu d'activité, a reconnu le docteur François Milord, médecin-conseil à la Direction de la santé publique de la Montérégie, en conférence de presse mercredi.

La Montérégie est d'ailleurs – et de loin – la région la plus affectée, regroupant à elle seule 76 cas et 11 décès, mais la maladie n'est pas plus répandue en nature qu'en milieu urbain, puisque ce sont les régions de Montréal et de Laval qui occupent les deuxième et troisième rangs respectivement. With data on acute infections detected in blood donors, an estimate of the degree of underrecognition was produced. All 2012 donors were tested for WNV infection with the use of reverse transcription–polymerase chain reaction (RT‐PCR). With the number of cases detected, the number of donors tested, our estimate of the duration of viremia, an estimate of the population at risk, and the ratio of WNND to total cases, an expected number of WNND cases was calculated. A Monte Carlo simulation was used to estimate the range of several of these variables. Seventeen RT‐PCR–positive donors were found among 52,309 donations tested. Monthly climate indices, particularly February, March and April minimum temperature and February precipitation, and the annual percentage of WNV-positive mosquito pools in a given PHU, were significantly predictive of human WNV incidence across PHUs of the southern portion of Ontario. When considering only ‘early season’ variables, which effectively excludes mosquito surveillance data, January and February mean minimum temperatures were of primary importance, highlighting the utility of climate data in predicting WNV risk in the upcoming transmission season. Our findings are similar to previous studies, which also found higher winter temperatures to be significantly predictive of increased rates of WNV transmission in an upcoming season.

We set out to produce mosquito abundance prediction surfaces for each of Ontario’s thirteen West Nile virus vectors. We also set out to determine whether elevation and proximity to conservation areas and provincial parks, wetlands, and population centres could be used to improve our model. Our results indicated that the data sets for Anopheles quadrimaculatus, Anopheles punctipennis, Anopheles walkeri, Culex salinarius, Culex tarsalis, Ochlerotatus stimulans, and Ochlerotatus triseriatus were not suitable for geospatial modelling because they are randomly distributed throughout Ontario. The bird seems to be “absent”, do not respond to external stimulation and presents an abnormal position of its tail. West Nile Virus (WNV), from the Flaviviridae family, can infect animals and people through stings from virus carrying mosquitoes. Even if certain species of mammals, such as horses, can be affected by this virus, it mainly causes mortalities in wild birds. L'Ontario arrive en deuxième place, avec 33 cas, suivie par le Manitoba avec 5 mentions. Aucune autre manifestation n'a été répertoriée ailleurs au Canada. En date du 19 décembre dernier, 58 % des patients atteints du VNO dans la population humaine au Canada présentaient des symptômes neurologiques. On entend par là des encéphalites, confusion, paralysie des membres inférieurs ou problèmes du système nerveux qui peuvent devenir permanents. Onze chevaux, dont un au Québec, ont aussi contracté le VNO en 2015.

Le sud du Québec a connu un automne et un début d'hiver 2015-2016 particulièrement doux grâce aux effets du fameux courant El Niño. Les oeufs de moustiques n'éclosent pas en hiver malgré des poussées de chaleur comme celle qu'on a connue la veille de Noël alors qu'il faisait 13 degrés au-dessus de zéro.
