Abstract Forty-six breakfast cereal samples from the Spanish market have been analyzed for the occurrence of aflatoxins (AFB1, AFG1, AFB2 and AFG2), ochratoxin A (OTA) and zearalenone (ZEA).

According to the results, 9% of the samples were contaminated with AFB1 although no sample exceeded the LOQ (0.2 μg kg−1), and no sample presented detectable levels of the other aflatoxins (AFB2, AFG1 and AFG2). Zearalenone and OTA contaminated 48 and 39% of the samples, respectively, with mean values of the samples having quantification levels of 25.40 and 0.37 μg kg−1, respectively. The co-occurrence of OTA and ZEA was observed in 28% of the samples. Aflatoxin B1 appeared only in the corn-based breakfast cereals, whereas ZEA and OTA showed the highest contamination rates in the samples containing wheat and wheat and rice, respectively.

This survey was undertaken following concerns that unseasonably damp weather conditions immediately prior to and during the 2004 English harvest may have led to cereal grain being stored at inappropriate moisture levels.

FSA 25/10/05 Survey of wheat for ochratoxin A

Storage of cereals, such as wheat, under such conditions has been shown to lead to growth of moulds, which can produce harmful chemicals known as mycotoxins, particularly ochratoxin A. This survey aimed to examine if this was an issue of concern and allow the Agency to take appropriate action if required. The concentration of ochratoxin A was determined in 115 samples of wheat. These were taken from six mills at different locations across England.

In those samples where ochratoxin A was detectable, levels found were generally low and in each case below the regulatory limit for ochratoxin A in raw cereals. Bruxelles, le 13 octobre 2004 Le comité permanent de la chaîne alimentaire et de la santé animale s’est prononcé hier en faveur d’une proposition de la Commission européenne visant à modifier le règlement (CE) n° 466/2001 afin de fixer une teneur maximale en ochratoxine A pour le café, le vin et le jus de raisin. L'ochratoxine A est une mycotoxine dont les propriétés cancérigènes et toxiques sont avérées. Des teneurs maximales ont déjà été établies pour ce contaminant en ce qui concerne les principales sources d’exposition de la population de l’UE, principalement les céréales, mais le suivi permanent a révélé qu'il conviendrait désormais d'en déterminer également pour d'autres sources alimentaires importantes.
