According to Regulation (EC) No 854/2004, Annex I, Section I, Chapter II, Part D, point 1, all external surfaces must be viewed in the post-mortem inspection and minimal handling of the carcases and offal or special technical facilities may be required (EC No 854/2004). Throughout the questionnaire, the meat inspection staff noted that this is not possible in most cases without at least handling the carcase and organs or modifying the slaughter line. In addition, a lack of visibility of sites known to harbour patho-physiological changes, particularly the heart, was seen as a problem.

Introduction In many countries, an increasing public interest in sustainable, high quality and safe food can be observed. With respect to farm animal production, many consumers expect food production processes taking into account aspects like animal welfare and other social and ethical attributes (Boogaard et al., 2006, Tonsor et al., 2009, Van Loo et al., 2014). Furthermore, concern about health and environmental risks caused by meat production is growing due to food scandals and crises in the last decades (Krystallis, De Barcellos, Kügler, Verbeke, & Grunert, 2009). This study explored microbiological metrics according to national target and critical values valid for samples at consumer level of 498 fresh poultry meat and 136 fresh pork filets from consignments subjected to physical checks during clearing at the border inspection post Hamburg harbour between January 2014 and December 2015 with ISO standard methods. Quantitative results indicated that critical thresholds for aerobic counts, Enterobacteriaceae, and E. coli were never surpassed. Merely for staphylococci, one poultry sample (0.2%) and 10 pork samples (9.3%) exceeded the critical limit (3.7 log cfu/g). Abstract The aim of this survey was to obtain data on microbiological contamination of pig carcasses and environments in three large-scale Italian slaughterhouses (identified as A-B-C) located in Northern Italy.
Each slaughterhouse was visited six times. Five carcasses and three different sites of the slaughterhouse (before and during slaughter) were sampled on each sampling day. A single pooled caecal sample was taken on each sampling day. A total of 90 carcasses, 108 environmental samples and 18 caecal samples were collected. Following the dioxin contamination in Ireland in 2008, the Irish Government received permission from the Commission to grant state aid (Aid No N 643/2008) to provide Irish pigmeat processors with assistance for the cost of removing ‘eligible product’ from the market that may have originated from Irish pigs.
The state aid received provided the basis for an emergency fund implemented by the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. The beneficiaries under this scheme were processors (primary and secondary) who could clearly demonstrate the retention and/or return of products, or provide documents from retailers showing a supply to them from the processors, where such products were sent for eventual destruction by rendering, or, in the case of product destroyed abroad, who were able to provide adequate documentary evidence of the destruction of any qualifying product. A review of strengths and weaknesses suggest that issues of relationships and communication are central to the development of MI as a health and welfare diagnostic tool.
Stakeholders recalled a number of instances of regular and open communication between producer and processors, and the benefit of this for producers’ sense of trust in processors, and in terms of their awareness of pig health and welfare issues. Stakeholders also identified as an opportunity, the value of existing relationships between producers and their private veterinary practitioner, especially in terms of working with producers on health and welfare concerns and visiting the processing plant on behalf of the producer. This point supports evidence from elsewhere on how veterinarians form a key component in facilitating effective communication, and capacity building at the farm level [5, 15, 16, 17, 18]. The monitoring of nucleus and multiplying herds is based on serum samples collected from the herds. Sampling From all breeding and multiplying herds, 10 serum samples are collected monthly from randomly chosen growing and finishing pigs. Tests and testing procedures The serum samples from nucleus and multiplying herds are analysed monthly for presence of antibodies to PRRS by a blocking-ELISA aimed at detecting antibodies to both European and US sub-types of PRRS virus.

It has emerged that a large number of countries still violate the tail-docking ban. Apparently it is only Luxembourg and Sweden which comply fully with the directive’s rules. In spite of repeated representations about this, and in spite of warnings by the European Parliament, the Commission does not appear willing to assume its responsibility and take these countries to the EU Court of Justice.
