The use of magnetic biochar promoted the formation of iron plaque on the reed root. The iron oxide from magnetic biochar reduced soil P availability. Plant performance and soil microbial biomass were reduced due to P deficiency. P supplementation should be recommended in magnetic biochar-applied soil. In this context, we aimed to study the cultivable microbiome selected by Phragmites australis plants in a Constructed Wetland (CW) in Morocco, in order to obtain candidate inoculants for the phytodepuration of azo-dye contaminated WW. A collection of 152 rhizospheric and endophytic bacteria was established. The strains were phylogenetically identified and characterized for traits of interest in the phytodepuration context. Lead (Pb), a heavy metal that is moderately immobile in soils, is a major source of soil contamination. Soils containing ranges of Pb concentration of 10∼30 and 30∼100 mg kg−1 are considered uncontaminated and slightly contaminated, respectively (Davies, 1990). When Pb concentrations reach 100∼500 mg kg−1 soil, plants exhibit symptoms of toxicity (Kabata-Pendias & Pendias, 1984) including inhibition of antioxidant enzyme activities, increase in lipid peroxidation, disturbance in mineral nutrient balance, and inhibition of photosynthesis (Gopal & Rizvi, 2008; Islam et al., 2008; Hu et al., 2012; Wang et al., 2012), which affect plant growth and survival.

Pesticides and some metabolites are of increasing concern because of their potential impacts on the environment, wildlife and human health. Within the context of the European Union (EU) water framework directive context to promote low pesticide-input farming and best management practices, the EU LIFE project ArtWET assessed the efficiency of ecological bioengineering methods using different artificial wetland (AW) prototypes throughout Europe.

We optimized physical and biological processes to mitigate agricultural nonpoint-source pesticide pollution in artificial wetland ecosystems.
