ITALIAN JOURNAL OF FOOD SAFETY - 2014 - Consumers' attitude towards fish meat

Consumers ask new products on the basis of different quality attributes: stability, safety, composition, better health effects, environment protection, etc. Different and controversial opinions on farmed and wild fish are also explored by literature review. The authors pay attention also to fish welfare as an emerging issue and effective information about fish products as a factor exerting a positive influence on consumers’ decision of purchase. Some relevant legislative notes on the paper’s topics are also cited.

Introduction The problem of illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing has intensified with an increase in the world demand for fish and stricter regulations on legal fishing.

In turn this has had a big environmental, social and economic impact. IUU fishing reduces fish stocks and makes it harder to manage fisheries sustainably, which affects the livelihood of local fishermen and can be detrimental to the marine environment. The EU is the world’s biggest market for fish, importing fish from countries around the world, but it was estimated that over €1 billion worth of fishery products imported into the EU every year were illegal. To prevent this, the EU introduced the IUU Fishing Regulation. The EU Control Regulation enforces the common fisheries rules and harmonises catch checks, traceability and sanctions across the EU. This guide explains when a catch certificate is needed and how to complete it. How illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing affects the industry The APEO scheme.

This version replaces the previous one/s. EFSA was requested by the European Parliament to conduct a scientific assessment of the health risks related to human consumption of wild and farmed fish. An EFSA Interpanel working group was set up to conduct this assessment. The opinion focused on the following finfish species as being marketed to a significant amount in the European Union: salmon, herring, anchovies, tuna, mackerel, pilchards, rainbow trout and carp.

A special focus was also given to Baltic herring at the request of the European Parliament. Of the selected fish, salmon, rainbow trout and carp are predominantly or exclusively farmed. Species, season, diet, location, lifestage and age have a major impact on both the nutrient and contaminant levels of fish.
