En août 2020, l'institut national de recherche spatiale du Brésil (INPE) a relevé 29 307 incendies en Amazonie brésilienne. Les feux de forêt sont la conséquence de la déforestation. Grâce à la base de données Trase, ils retracent environ 90 000 configurations différentes de chaîne logistique, depuis les municipalités ou les États fédérés de production jusqu'aux portes des usines des pays importateurs. Ces données représentent la quasi-totalité du soja brésilien exporté entre 2010 et 2015. En appliquant une méthode d'analyses du cycle de vie à l'ensemble de ces configurations, les auteurs quantifient les émissions de GES liées à la production (changements d'usage des terres et pratiques culturales), à la transformation (en huile et en tourteaux) et au transport (domestique et international) du soja et de ses produits dérivés. Environ la moitié du soja brésilien est produit dans la région du Cerrado. Ce biome unique, composé de la plus grande zone de savane tropicale du globe, abrite 5 % de la biodiversité mondiale. Une étude publiée en 2019 dans le journal PNAS s'est intéressée aux impacts de cette production et à ses responsables. Introduction China has a population of over 1.3 billion people and is today the second largest economy in the world, according to the World Bank [1]. The GDP growth of China has averaged nearly 10% per year over the last 30 years, and, in what is reported as a slowdown in its economy, is growing at 6.7% for 2015 [1]. This rapid economic growth has had effects on Chinese society, resulting in, among other things, an increase in animal protein consumption, which accompanies improved incomes [2,3]. The other big change—and one profoundly related to it—is the rapid urbanization of China, which has gone from 42.52% urban to 55.61% urban between 2005 and 2015 [4].
