This document is intended to provide some basic information on Atlantic salmon, its consumption, and its aquaculture. Section 1: Salmon What are "salmon"? Salmon are fish that belong to the family of Salmonidae (biologists classify types of organisms according to similar characteristics: the term “families” encompasses the more commonly used terms “genus” and “species.” Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar (salmon, the leaper) is native to the North Atlantic, and is generally recognized to consist of three populations: North American, European, and Baltic. The recommendation by experts that that further testing be conducted for the time being was the conclusion of a hearing arranged by the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and echoed broadly in the media. The salmon would have been the first genetically modified animal approved for human consumption. The GM salmon (known under the brand name AquAdvantage) is exactly as safe as other salmon types, according to the results of a recently concluded safety assessment by the FDA.

In its material composition, foodstuff derived from the salmon in question was indistinguishable from conventional salmon products. According to the same report, the possible endangerment of wild salmon could be ignored since the GM salmon would be kept exclusively in farms at great distances to coastal regions.

The fish, developed by Massachusetts-based AquaBounty Technologies, is Atlantic salmon given the growth hormone gene of the faster-growing Pacific salmon, along with DNA from the eel-like ocean pout. The company claims that the resulting AquAvantage salmon reaches maturity at twice the rate of normal Atlantic salmon, and requires 25 percent less food. This is the first time that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has considered the safety of genetic engineering in animals intended for human consumption, and it has no specific framework for doing so.

Therefore the GE process is being assessed by its Veterinary Medicine Advisory Committee through its new animal drug approval procedure. The DNA of the top fish has been genetically engineered to produce growth hormones all the time for its entire life. Despite overwhelming opposition from citizens and public interest groups to genetically engineered (GE) food, including 400,000 public comments opposing GE salmon, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced December 26, 2012 that it is prepared to give transgenic salmon its final stamp of approval.
