PENN STATE NEWS 02/04/15 Rapid increase in neonicotinoid insecticides driven by seed treatments. UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Use of a class of insecticides, called neonicotinoids, increased dramatically in the mid-2000s and was driven almost entirely by the use of corn and soybean seeds treated with the pesticides, according to researchers at Penn State.
“Previous studies suggested that the percentage of corn acres treated with insecticides decreased during the 2000s, but once we took seed treatments into account we found the opposite pattern,” said Margaret Douglas, graduate student in entomology. “Our results show that application of neonicotinoids to seed of corn and soybeans has driven a major surge in the U.S. cropland treated with insecticides since the mid-2000s.” According to Douglas, research suggests that neonicotinoids may harm pollinators. The European Union suspended neonicotioid use on bee-attractive crops and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is expediting their review. The USDA’s Northeast IPM Center supported this research. Abstract Bioassays were designed to evaluate Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillemin strain GHA against Listronotus maculicollis (Kirby) adults.
B. bassiana and its “inert” carrier oil in the product BotaniGard and the “inert” carrier oil alone provided 99 and 96% mortality respectively in Petri dish assays 1 d after treatment when applied in 1 ml water. When the same treatments were applied in 0.5 ml of carrier water mortality was only 1.4 and 0.7% respectively 1 d after treatment. After 10 d in Petri dishes, B. bassiana and its “inert” carrier oil and the “inert” carrier oil alone applied in 0.5 ml water showed 77 and 9% mortality respectively. When one-tenth the label dosage of B. bassiana and “inert” carrier oil was combined with neonicotinoids clothianidin, imidacloprid, and dinotefuran applied in 1 ml water, there were significant increases (34, 30, and 68% respectively) in weevil mortality over the neonicotinoids alone 1 d after treatment.

For immediate release: May 9, 2014 Boston, MA — Two widely used neonicotinoids—a class of insecticide—appear to significantly harm honey bee colonies over the winter, particularly during colder winters, according to a new study from Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH).
The study replicated a 2012 finding from the same research group that found a link between low doses of imidacloprid and Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), in which bees abandon their hives over the winter and eventually die. The new study also found that low doses of a second neonicotinoid, clothianidin, had the same negative effect. Further, although other studies have suggested that CCD-related mortality in honey bee colonies may come from bees’ reduced resistance to mites or parasites as a result of exposure to pesticides, the new study found that bees in the hives exhibiting CCD had almost identical levels of pathogen infestation as a group of control hives, most of which survived the winter. P. (2011) Transcriptome analysis of honey bee larvae following neonicotinoid exposure. MRes thesis, University of Nottingham. The current decline of the European Honey Bee (Apis Mellifera) has been linked to the increasing use of neonicotinoid pesticides within agriculture. Whilst the toxicity of these pesticides to Apis has long been established, the possibility of low dosages inducing molecular stress has not yet been fully explored. Of particular interest is the action of these nicotine derivatives on the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, and its association with the DNA methyltransferase family (Dnmts). Abstract : The intensive use of insecticides against crop pests and vectors of human and animal leads to several polemics about their mode of action.
All these controversies are related to the fact that the mode of action of insecticides in insects is poorly unknown, in particular neonicotinoids which act on nicotinic acetylcholine (ACh) receptors (nAChR).During this PhD thesis, we characterized for the first time the pharmacological properties of a cockroach ⍺7 homomeric receptor in a xenopus oocyte.
Our results revealed that cockroach ⍺7 in an atypical receptor that is insensitive to ⍺-bungarotoxin and not activated by neonicotinoids. Cockroach and rat ⍺7 receptors which are included in the same cluster have distinct pharmacological properties. We then studied the pharmacological properties of native receptors, in particular, the modulatory effect of permethrin on dinotefuran-induced currents. This work was included in the study of Vectra 3D.
