ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Fish and shellfish are, with very few exceptions, generally considered safe.
Food safety laws in many parts of the world are, however, requiring companies to implement programs such as Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) as a means of assuring food safety from harvest to consumption. In South Africa, fishing companies wishing to export products to countries such as the European Union (EU), the United Sates (US), et cetera have, over the past number of years, been required to implement HACCP. Various issues are, however at stake with regards to the successful implementation of HACCP and thus this study project is primarily focused on the application of the HACCP system to the white fish industry. The method of study involved consultation with various local authorities in order to highlight existing HACCP problems within the South African White Fish Industry. International Journal of Food Microbiology Volume 208, 2 September 2015, Quality and shelf-life prediction for retail fresh hake (Merluccius merluccius) Open Access Highlights We propose a methodology to predict hake quality under nonisothermal conditions. The dynamic microbial spoilage model incorporates fish-to-fish variability. Optimal experimental design is exploited to reduce prediction uncertainty.
The methodology can be extended to other fish species and other stress variables. Abstract. SEAFOODSOURCE 18/03/15 Rabobank: Seafood is world’s most widely traded animal protein. Published on Wednesday, March 18 2015 The seafood industry is more of a global business than any other animal protein sector but trade flows are in constant flux, according to a new seafood trade map and report compiled by Rabobank International.
With an estimated traded value of USD 140 billion (EUR 132 billion) in 2014, exports have nearly doubled in value in the last five years, said Rabobank. This growth comes from the rise of aquaculture, but can also be explained by processing in regions with lower labor costs and rising prices on a per unit level. In the coming years, China is expected to maintain its leading role as a seafood exporter, but other growing export-oriented aquaculture countries such as Norway, India, Vietnam, Indonesia and Ecuador are also positioned to further boost exports.
“The industry is very diverse and offers a wide range of products, with each having its own export and import markets. Changing China. Since the horse meat saga began in 2012, some of us have decided to eat more fish and seafood - after all, we have been told they are better for our health.
Well, that may not be quite true today. While EU law allows consumers shopping at supermarkets to learn where their seafood comes from, most restaurants are under no obligation to reveal how far their seafood has travelled to get to a diner's plate. In particular, only limited information is available for those seafood contaminants for which the authorities have set no maximum limits. These include priority contaminants such as biotoxins from harmful algal blooms and marine litter. In order to improve seafood safety for consumers and to reduce risks to human health, the ECsafeSEAFOOD project aims to assess the safety issues mainly related to non-regulated priority contaminants and to evaluate their impact on public health.
