EUREKALERT 18/07/18 146 Scientists identify five key research fields for transforming US agriculture and food production Etude en question: WASHINGTON, DC (July 18, 2018)--A new blueprint produced by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM), "Science Breakthroughs 2030," lays out how research can transform the fields of agriculture and food production.

EUREKALERT 18/07/18 146 Scientists identify five key research fields for transforming US agriculture and food production Etude en question:

Drawn from an extensive process that incorporated the voices of 146 scientists in dozens of fields, the report highlights potential "breakthroughs" through five critical initiatives of agricultural research that need to be prioritized--microbiomes, gene editing, data analysis, sensors and biosensors, and transdisciplinary collaborations. "Agriculture is confronting a crisis no less epic than the dustbowl of the 1930s," said Thomas Grumbly, President of the Supporters of Agricultural Research (SoAR) Foundation, which commissioned the NASEM report. "The American scientific community has now mapped out how we can transform food production, answering many of the challenges that have emerged to getting dinner on the table every night.

USDA 19/02/15 USDA-NIFA and United Kingdom-Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council Partner for Animal Disease Prevention Research

Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) and the United Kingdom's Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) today announced five jointly funded research awards that total more than $2.3 million from NIFA and £2.3 million British pounds ($3,502,683 equivalent) from the BBSRC for the US-UK Collaborative Animal Health and Disease and Veterinary Immune Reagents program. This US-UK partnership addresses high impact diseases and animal health issues relevant to both countries. "As a leading livestock producing nation, the health of the people in the United States and around the world depends on the safety, security, and quality of the livestock we produce," said Sonny Ramaswamy, NIFA director. Steve Visscher, BBSRC Deputy Chief Executive, International, said: "A growing world population means that safe and secure food supplies are going to become more and more important in the years to come.

Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) today announced support for research, education, and extension projects that promote a safe, nutritious food supply. The funding is made possible through NIFA’s Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program, authorized by the 2014 Farm Bill. “Each year, 1 in 6 Americans gets sick consuming contaminated foods or beverages,” said NIFA Director Sonny Ramaswamy.

“NIFA support enables scientists to investigate and develop innovative approaches to detect and control microbial and other contaminants in our food, contributing to the production of safe, high-quality, nourishing food.” PENN STATE UNIVERSITY - 2017 - A Review of the National Research and Extension Agenda for Agricultural Safety and Health. FOOD SAFETY MAGAZINE - December 2016/January 2017 - Au sommaire: Environmental Monitoring in the Era of Whole-Genome Sequencing

The U.S. Department of Agriculture-Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS)-regulated community is accustomed to pathogen environmental monitoring programs, but the topic may challenge some U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-regulated facilities as they update their food safety practices to comply with various aspects of the Food Safety Modernization Act. Ever since the ready-to-eat (RTE) meat category began tackling this topic, resources have poured out, providing guidance and recommendations on how to develop and implement effective environmental monitoring programs for several product types. 1. 2. 3.

Additionally, the scientific advances and rapid adoption of whole-genome sequencing (WGS) to identify, with a greater degree of specificity than ever before, the isolates found when regulators swab a facility take the concern around environmental monitoring to a whole new level. • Compositing 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. At minimum, it is critical that ALL companies register their brands with CBP. If you don’t register your brands then you’re missing out on the possible help of CBP. In November 2015 the US Government Accountability Office (GAO) released a report titled “Intellectual Property: US Customs and Border Protection Could Better Manage Its Process to Enforce Exclusion Orders .”

The Exclusion Orders are the application of Section 337 of the Tariff Act of 1930 (19 US Code 1337) . “The [US International Trade Commission] investigates allegations of unfair import practices, including unlicensed use of intellectual property rights such as patents, copyrights, and trademarks. Their article, “Community food systems: Strengthening the research-to-practice continuum,” provides an initial analysis of the bibliography and is published in the spring 2013 issue of the Journal of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Community Development (www.AgDevJournal.com). “Our hope is to foster a conversation about community food systems in which research and practice are mutually reinforcing,” says co-author David Campbell of the Department of Human Ecology at UC Davis. The paper concludes with suggestions for research that responds to the challenges and unites practitioners and academics.
