VET RECORD - JUILLET 2020 - Prioritisation of animal welfare issues in the UK using expert consensus. Introduction Historically, animal welfare concerns were directed primarily at farmed livestock, following significant unease at the intensification and confinement of animals in the 1960s (eg, the publication of Animal Machines: by Ruth Harrison in 19641).
However, animal welfare remains an area of consistent public concern and these concerns now include all classes of animals where human activities have an influence on animal lives. Improvements in animal welfare may be achieved through legislation or policy changes, education of owners and veterinarians, and through research to understand the issues and the impact of husbandry on animal responses. To address welfare issues, it may be necessary to determine where limited funding resources should be directed to support scientific research, to raise awareness of best practice through knowledge transfer or education initiatives, or to direct attention towards the most pressing issues.

BMC VET RES 22/05/19 Health-related Welfare Prioritisation of Canine Disorders Using Electronic Health Records in Primary Care Practice in the UK. Improving the health-related welfare of dogs requires identification and prioritisation of important health issues for targeted reform.
Breed-related disorders are established as a significant issue affecting UK dog welfare, but identifying specific disorders on which to focus available resources for maximum canine welfare improvement is challenging [8, 14, 18]. This paper describes the development and application of a VetCompass data-driven strategy for evidence-based canine disorder prioritisation based on comparing relative health-related welfare impact.
Novel welfare metrics, developed to assess annual frequency, severity and duration across disorders, were generated for eight major disorders with evidence of breed associations, using EHR data from randomly selected cases identified from VetCompass. Disorders assessed Prevalence Duration Objective and quantitative methods are required to compare duration across the spectrum of canine disease. Severity Limitations. Introduction Animal welfare remains an area of consistent public concern, with acceptance of animal sentience enshrined in the legislation of many countries.
Historically, animal welfare concerns have been directed primarily at farmed livestock, with increasing awareness and unease at the intensification and confinement of animals in the 1960s [e.g., following the publication of “Animal Machines” by Ruth Harrison in 1964 (1)]. In the United Kingdom, there is strong animal welfare legislation with good compliance generally (2). However, there are differing views of what is important for animal welfare, from different stakeholders, which may result in conflicting welfare outcomes (3, 4), and decisions on which aspects of welfare to prioritize.
Traditionally, farm animal welfare has referred to minimal acceptable standards of farm animals. There are many possible methodologies to try to rank the welfare priorities of animals. Methods. CENTRAL WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY - 2019 - Thèse en ligne : The Challenges for a Closed-to-the-Public Animal Sanctuary: Prioritizing animal welfare while engaging in educational community outreach. Abstract Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest is a small primate sanctuary in Cle Elum, Washington, and is presently home to seven chimpanzees who were retired from biomedical research.
I used this sanctuary as a case study to find out how a closed-to-the-public sanctuary can engage in educational outreach without compromising the welfare of the residents. I employed a combination of semi-structured interviews of sanctuary personnel, ethnographic participant-observation as a volunteer caregiver, and an online survey offered to the local community to help me understand the goals and limitations of sanctuaries. I also designed and conducted two educational programs for local area schools as beta tests for educational outreach program design. My research revealed that resource limitations like staffing and funding often prohibit sanctuaries from making educational outreach a priority. Recommended Citation.
