Conversely, concentrations were >300 ng/g ww, the level that may trigger consumption advisories, in 21 of 42 samples (50 %; 14 of 21 redhorse, 7 of 21 sunfish) from the most heavily contaminated reach (Desloge to Mammoth Access) of the BR (Fig. 2). Concentrations at House Springs were generally intermediate; only one sample (sunfish) exceeded 300 ng/g ww (Fig. 2). At contaminated BR sites within and downstream of the OLB, where Pb concentrations were highest, fillet Ca explained 75 % to >99 % of the total variation in fillet Pb. Calcium explained only 18 %–61 % of the variation in samples from the MR and 3 %–9 % in samples from Irondale, where Pb concentrations were lower (Fig. 2; Table 2). Abstract : Lead concentrations and isotopic composition have been measured in bone and teeth of small cetaceans belonging to three species (Delphinus delphis, Phocoena phocoena and Stenella coeruleoalba), to evaluate the toxicological risk and to determine sources of lead in the European waters.

Lead concentrations, far lower than threshold value inducing toxic effects in human, were higher in teeth than in bones, but highly correlated between the two tissues (r = 0.92, p < 0.001). Large variations of 206Pb/207Pb values in bone tissue showed that cetaceans must be submitted to various atmospheric influences. No geographical differences appeared which is consistent with studies on their distribution indicating seasonal movements between Brittany waters and the Bay of Biscay. The negative correlation between 206Pb/207Pb ratios and age of the individuals reflected the decrease in the production of alkyl lead in Europe, i.e., the increasing use of unleaded gasoline. NIFES 08/06/08 Cadmium and lead in bivalves – importance for food safety. The National Institute of Nutrition and Seafood Research (NIFES) has analysed the content of cadmium and lead in scallops and horse mussels harvested in Norwegian waters.

The results show levels above EU’s maximum limits when analysing the digestive gland of the scallop and the kidney of the horse mussel. Cadmium in the digestive gland from scallops Shell feed by filtering seawater. During this process they may take up particles which contain contaminants. NIFES analysis indicates that scallops contain little lead.

However, analysis showed that the cadmium content (3.7 - 8.4 mg/kg) exceeded EU’s maximum limits if the entire shell content was measured, but that most of this was found in the digestive gland. Cartographie IFREMER des contaminants chimiques concernant les huîtres et les moules du littoral français. De 1979 à 2007, le RNO a évalué les niveaux de contamination chimique du littoral en utilisant les moules et les huîtres comme indicateurs quantitatifs.

Les facultés de bioaccumulation de ces mollusques sont mises à profit pour obtenir une image de la contamination fiable et intégrée sur plusieurs mois. L’objectif de ce produit est de représenter l’importance relative de la contamination chimique sur le littoral français pour 13 paramètres suivis par le réseau d’observation de la contamination chimique du milieu marin ROCCH (ex RNO). Les observations retenues portent sur 83 points de surveillance répartis sur le littoral et suivis une fois par an pour les contaminants organiques et deux fois par an pour les métaux.

Afin de donner une image actualisée, la période retenue est 2003-2007. Les données ont été archivées dans la base de données Quadrige, référentiel national pour les données de la surveillance du littoral.
