Adopter un nouveau régime alimentaire pourrait inverser cette tendance, selon les scientifiques. Le régime et le mode de vie à l’occidentale ont été une nouvelle fois pointés du doigt dans une récente étude publiée par la revue scientifique Nature, qui examine l’évolution des habitudes alimentaires des habitants dans les 100 pays les plus peuplés de 1961 à 2009. L’étude montre que les tendances alimentaires ont évolué en fonction de l’augmentation des revenus et de l’urbanisation.

Elle révèle une occidentalisation des régimes alimentaires, avec une plus grande ingestion de viande, de graisse et de sucre, selon l’analyse. Dans le même temps, la part de consommation d’aliments nocifs pour la santé a augmenté, tandis que la consommation d’aliments sains a diminué. These are some of the findings of the latest Danish national diet survey conducted by the National Food Institute, Technical University of Denmark. The latest Danish national survey of diet and physical activity shows that Danes are closer to meeting some of the official dietary recommendations. Nearly 4,000 people have participated in the national survey from 2011-2013. More fish and vegetables "It is actually quite simply: By following the well-documented, official dietary guidelines it is possible to achieve a healthy diet. " Most Danes eat vegetables every day and the proportion of the diet that vegetables account for has increased almost 20 percent since the last diet survey from 2003-2008. Average consumption of fish has also increased, particularly in the adult diet which contains approximately 14 grams more fish per day. Fewer empty calories.

A study of the most recently available national data reveals that 25–70% of adults are overweight, depending on the country; 5–30% are obese, and 41% do not engage in any moderate physical activity in a typical week. Overweight and physical inactivity contribute to the explosion in noncommunicable diseases in Europe. Cardiovascular diseases (CVD), cancer, chronic respiratory diseases and type 2 diabetes mellitus account for 86% of deaths and 77% of the disease burden in the Region. Speaking in Brussels at a high-level conference on monitoring and evaluation of European Member States’ strategies on nutrition-, overweight- and obesity-related issues on 8 December 2010, Zsuzsanna Jakab, WHO Regional Director for Europe, identified common challenges for countries and partners.
