Pesticides approval and registration are performed "taking into account the economic, social and environmental costs and benefits of the use of any pesticide". The present book documents the various adverse impacts of pesticides usage: pollution, dietary intake and health effects such as birth defects, neurological disorders, cancer and hormone disruption. Risk assessment methods and the involvement of molecular modeling to the knowledge of pesticides are highlighted, too. The volume summarizes the expertise of leading specialists from all over the world.

Descriptors: Pesticides, poisoning. OBJETIVO: Estimar externalidades asociadas con las intoxicaciones agudas por pesticidas. Descriptores: Plaguicidas, envenenamiento. There has been a relevant growth in Brazilian agriculture and agribusiness in recent years.

On the other hand, the policy in favor of pesticide use is frequently supported by the strength of rural politicians in the Brazilian National Congress. The economics literature provides several methods in the area of valuing externalities. Abstract We develop a theoretical basis for voluntary reduction in insecticide use, and quantify the subjective value farmers place on reducing environmental risk.

The indirect utility model is used to quantify the acceptable financial cost of eliminating one insecticide application in return for avoidance of moderate risk to the environment. The mean valuation in Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska and Ohio, USA, is $8.25 per acre. Acceptable yield loss increases with importance of environmental goods, with formal education and with farming experience. Valuation increases with total expenditure on insecticides up to $89 per acre. Abstract The Pesticide Environmental Accounting (PEA) tool provides a monetary estimate of environmental and health impacts per hectare-application for any pesticide.

The model combines the Environmental Impact Quotient method and a methodology for absolute estimates of external pesticide costs in UK, USA and Germany. For many countries resources are not available for intensive assessments of external pesticide costs.
