Insbesondere die Verwendung von Tetraethylblei als Antiklopfmittel in Kraftstoffen war lange Zeit eine wichtige Emissionsquelle. Durch die Abschaffung von verbleiten Kraftstoffen sind die Konzentrationen von Blei in der Luft, in Lebensmitteln und nachfolgend im Blut der Allgemeinbevölkerung deutlich zurückgegangen. Für die europäische Allgemeinbevölkerung stellen heutzutage Lebensmittel, insbesondere Getreide und Getreideprodukte, Kartoffeln, Blattgemüse und Trinkwasser, die Hauptexpositionsquelle dar. Typische Bleikonzentrationen in Lebensmitteln liegen zwischen 10 und 200 µg/kg, wobei pflanzliche Lebensmittel in der Regel weniger Blei enthalten als tierische. Höhere Gehalte finden sich in Innereien, Muscheln, Pilzen und Gewürzen, die zum Teil deutlich über 1 mg/kg liegen können [16].

However, the high demand may compromise the quality of production with possible contamination of heavy metals which have shown to cause intoxication and death in humans. This study evaluated some constituents of twenty-six soft drinks in Nigeria and investigated the presence of some heavy metal contaminants. The soft drinks were screened for the presence of sugar, carbon dioxide, phosphate and alcohol as well as the pH and acidity determined. The level of cadmium, mercury and lead were determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometer.
