Chase Beisel is an Assistant Professor at North Carolina State University who was recognized earlier this year with one of Bay Area Lyme Foundation’s prestigious Emerging Leader Awards. This honor is in recognition of and support for his lab‘s novel work exploring CRISPR technology as a potential treatment for Lyme infections. Dr. Beisel’s work integrates molecular biology, chemical engineering, and mathematical modeling and has been acknowledged with several National Science Foundation (NSF), National Institute for Health (NIH) and other important awards. Lyme disease, a scourge in her native Virginia, had previously struck both her mother and brother, so the family was aware of the drawbacks of the single available diagnostic test. The current blood test probes for antibodies developed against the disease-causing bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, which only appear several weeks after the onset of symptoms such as the telltale reddish oval or “bull’s-eye” rash that appears in three-fourths of cases. It’s so rewarding to see that my research materialized into something useful. PARASITES & VECTORS 24/06/16 Borrelia sp. phylogenetically different from Lyme disease- and relapsing fever-related Borrelia spp. in Amblyomma varanense from Python reticulatus.

Ticks were collected from the following five snake species: Python reticulatus, Ophiophagus hannah, Ptyas korros, Naja kaouthia and Elaphe radiata.

Four Amblyomma varanense ticks (three males and one female) were collected from one P. reticulatus. One A. varanense tick (one female) and two Amblyomma pattoni (males) were collected from O. hannah. We investigated the roles of birds as hosts for subadult Ixodes pacificus ticks and potential reservoirs of the Lyme disease spirochete B. burgdorferi sensu stricto (s.s.) in northwestern California. Overall, 623 birds representing 53 species yielded 284 I. pacificus larvae and nymphs. We used generalized linear models and zero-inflated negative binomial models to determine associations of bird behaviors, taxonomic relationships and infestation by I. pacificus with borrelial infection in the birds. The findings, published today (Wednesday, Feb. 25) in the journal PLOS ONE, shine a light on an important new reservoir in the western United States for the corkscrew-shaped bacterium, Borrelia burgdorferi, responsible for Lyme disease. Wood rats, western gray squirrels and other small mammals have been identified in previous studies as wildlife hosts of the Lyme disease spirochete bacterium in California, but fewer studies have looked at the role of birds as reservoirs.
