Diss Meschik 2020. Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science 23/09/19 Analysis of Non-conformities in Road Transport of Animals in Poland. The paper presents the results of analysis of inspections of animal transport vehicles in Poland in 2007–2016.
Due to animal welfare and the increased epidemiological risk the animal control system included the points of carriage provided for in the animal carriage law, i.e., during transport, at the sites of shipment, sites of rest, at destination points as well as at fairs and purchase points. The largest number of non-conformities were revealed at destination points (slaughterhouses), where the highest number of inspections were carried out.
Inspections were conducted by veterinary inspectors and non-conformities were mainly related to animal health, documentation, transport practices and vehicles. GREENS EFA (EU) 19/06/20 Victory for animal welfare – MEPs vote for inquiry committee on animal transport. Today (Friday 19 June), after long-standing calls from the Greens/EFA Group in the European Parliament, MEPs have just voted in favour of setting up a committee of inquiry into animal transport.
Every year, around one and a half billion pigs, cows and other animals are transported for days in cramped conditions across the European Union and to third countries, often without adequate water supplies and at unbearable temperatures. These transport conditions are reportedly often in breach of EU law.The Commission and the Member States have not been doing their part in making sure the rules on animal welfare are respected. Tilly Metz MEP, Greens/EFA Member of the Agricultural Committee and one of the initiators of the inquiry committee, comments: "Cruelty to animals, blatant violations of animal welfare rules, and the responsibility of the European Commission and EU governments must be thoroughly investigated.

The new inquiry committee, established by 605 votes in favour to 53 against, with 31 abstentions, should investigate alleged violations in the application of European Union law on the protection of animals during transport and related operations within and outside the EU, including by air, road, rail and sea. The committee will look into the EU Commission’s alleged failure to act upon the evidence that EU rules on moving live animals across the EU and to third countries are being seriously and systematically infringed.

SCI. 10/01/19 Do Pigs Have Adequate Space in Animal Transportation Vehicles?—Planimetric Measurement of the Floor Area Covered by Finishing Pigs in Various Body Positions. Introduction In the European Union about 255 million pigs are slaughtered each year (1).
Most of these are fattening pigs transported to the slaughterhouse by trucks. During these journeys, fattening pigs are exposed to numerous and variable stressors, such as variations in ambient temperature, vehicle movements, handling by humans, social pressure by mixing unfamiliar pigs or inappropriate space available (2–4). It is generally accepted that the loading density on the transport vehicle has a strong influence on the welfare of the pigs and that the provision of appropriate space is a key factor (5). To provide recommendations for statutory space requirements, the floor area covered by a pig's body (referring to the static space) requires a precise definition. Accordingly, current European legislation is based on outdated data.

News item | 25-11-2014 | 20:00 Ministry for Agriculture Dijksma has divided the country into four regions to contain the recent outbreaks of avian influenza.
This will keep contact between poultry holdings to a minimum, and segregate the densely populated poultry areas. The measures also limit the transportation of broiler chickens for slaughter to within the region. As there is insufficient capacity at the slaughterhouses in East Brabant and Limburg, a corridor for the transportation of the broilers has also been introduced. Minister Dijksma: “We must make every effort to stop the avian influenza virus from spreading. GLOBAL MEAT 24/04/15 ECJ says EU animal transport welfare controls can apply for journeys outside the EU.
Under EU regulation 1/2005, directives 64/432/EEC and 93/119/EC, and regulation 1255/97, for national regulators to authorise the transport of horses, cattle, pigs, sheep or goats, a haulier must provide a realistic journey log complying with EU welfare rules.
A German court had asked whether these declarations should note the stages of the journey taking place outside the EU as well as inside. They include, for instance, information on watering and feeding intervals, journey times, and resting periods. The case comes amidst controversy about the treatment of EU-reared livestock when they are sent outside the EU for slaughter, for instance in the Middle East.
"Under the EU treaties, since animals are sentient beings, the EU and the Member States are to pay full regard to the welfare requirements of animals. To that end, the EU legislature has laid down detailed provisions in a regulation governing the protection of animals during transport," said the ECJ.
