TRANSBOUNDARY AND EMERGING DISEASES 01/12/19 Spatiotemporal reconstruction and transmission dynamics during the 2016–17 H5N8 highly pathogenic avian influenza epidemic in Italy. In 2016–17, a highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) epidemic caused by A(H5N8) viruses of clade 2.3.4.4 occurred in 29 European Countries.

TRANSBOUNDARY AND EMERGING DISEASES 01/12/19 Spatiotemporal reconstruction and transmission dynamics during the 2016–17 H5N8 highly pathogenic avian influenza epidemic in Italy

This was the largest HPAI epidemic ever recorded in Europe in terms of number of poultry outbreaks, wild bird deaths recorded and geographical extent (Adlhoch et al., 2018; Brown, Kuiken, et al., 2017; Brown, Mulatti, et al., 2017). Between October 2016 and December 2017, approximately 1,500 cases were identified in wild birds and more than 1,200 outbreaks were reported in poultry across Europe, with frequent primary incursions affecting all productive sectors, ranging from backyard/rural to industrial.

Secondary spread between domestic premises was also detected, most commonly associated with domestic waterfowl species (Brown, Kuiken, et al., 2017; Brown, Mulatti, et al., 2017). 2.1 Data Virus sequences and epidemiological data for 83 domestic cases and 12 wild birds were analysed. 2.2 Phylogenetic analysis 2.3 Continuous phylogeography. The H5N8 virus has been circulating for months now in some EU Member States, as well as in many German regions.

PARLEMENT EUROPEEN - Réponse à question E-001092-17 Are the statutory safeguards against bird flu (H5N8) fit for purpose?

In many places strict emergency measures and regulations have been introduced to contain the epidemic. Some of these are long term and will cause heavy losses for the farmers and breeding centres affected. 1. The current legal requirements date back to 2006/2007 when they were drawn up to tackle the H5N1 virus which can be transmitted to humans. In the Commission’s view, are these appropriate to the current situation or does it think it would be sensible to have measures that are more flexible and more specifically regional? 2. 3. EFSA 14/12/16 Urgent request on avian influenza. PEERJ 30/04/15 The European and Japanese outbreaks of H5N8 derive from a single source population providing evidence for the dispersal along the long distance bird migratory flyways. Introduction The H5N8 virus is an example of a highly pathogenic avian influenza A (HPAI).

These HPAI viruses pose a significant threat to domestic poultry, as mortality rates amongst chickens are particularly high and can reach 100%. Recent studies of the virus have shown that it has a pathogenicity index of 3 in chickens (Kim et al., 2014). This is significantly higher than that of the original H5N8 from Ireland, although that is a distinct lineage (Alexander, Parsons & Manvell, 1986). The management of the outbreak in Korea in early 2014 resulted in the culling of over 10 million birds, or 6% of the total Korean poultry flock (Kang et al., 2015).

Currently unlike H5N1, H5N8 is not considered a threat to human health, as there has not been a case of transmission to humans.

EUROSURVEILLANCE 02/07/15 Phylogenetic analysis of highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N8) virus outbreak strains provides evidence for four separate introductions and one between-poultry farm transmission in the Netherlands, November 2014.

Phylogenetic analysis of highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N8) virus strains causing outbreaks in Dutch poultry farms in 2014 provides evidence for separate introduction of the virus in four outbreaks in farms located 16–112 km from each other and for between-farm transmission between the third and fourth outbreak in farms located 550 m from each other.

In addition, the analysis showed that all European and two Japanese H5N8 virus strains are very closely related and seem to originate from a calculated common ancestor, which arose between July and September 2014. Our findings suggest that the Dutch outbreak virus strain ‘Ter Aar’ and the first German outbreak strain from 2014 shared a common ancestor. In addition, the data indicate that the Dutch outbreak viruses descended from an H5N8 virus that circulated around 2009 in Asia, possibly China, and subsequently spread to South Korea and Japan and finally also to Europe. After initial detection in 2010 in China, a new highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus of the H5N8 subtype reemerged in ducks in South Korea in 2014 (1,2). The hemagglutinin gene of this virus was distantly related to those of H5N1 subtypes that have caused infections in humans since 1997 (3). The World Health Organization/World Organisation for Animal Health/Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations H5N1 Evolution Working Group has assigned this new H5 to clade 2.3.4.4. Several poultry farms in the Netherlands, Germany, United Kingdom, and Italy were recently affected by infection with H5N8 virus closely related to the strains circulating in Asia (4), leading to implementation of preventive measures to restrict viral spread.
