Crop Protection Volume 127, January 2020, How European Union accession and implementation of obligatory integrated pest management influenced forest protection against diseases and weeds: A case study from Poland

Introduction Forest protection against harmful organisms depends vastly on preventive measures. However, chemical treatments are also used in forests. In the European Union (EU), chemical protection has been strongly regulated by common law since 1991. In addition, ten years ago, obligatory implementation of integrated pest management was introduced in the EU by the Directive (2009)/128. It is interesting to study how these legal acts have influenced the chemical protection of forests against diseases and weeds. 2. The characteristics of forests in Poland against the background of the European Union were recently presented by Matyjaszczyk et al. (2019).

In forest management, chemical treatment against weeds and diseases is mainly performed in three cases: In nurseries (Weiland et al., 2016). During afforestation by planting or seeding. Table 1. FORESTS 31/01/20 Geochemical Referencing of Natural Forest Contamination in Poland. Various studies have established possible threats posed due to pollution using ecological risk indices, but most have focused strictly on anthropogenic areas, so the data from these studies are less comparable with those obtained from natural forest sites, which was the focus of this current study.

FORESTS 31/01/20 Geochemical Referencing of Natural Forest Contamination in Poland

The main reason for this focus could be attributed to the commonly agreed reference provided by natural forest parks, which are assumed to be uncontaminated. The aim of this research was to determine if the Kampinoski National Park (Poland) could be considered a geochemical referencing ecosystem for Pb, Cd, and Ni levels. The specific purpose was to conduct a soil-background-based evaluation of metal contamination with a focus on geochemical indices as normative tools for assessing similar forest ecosystems at local and international levels.

The toxicity response factors indicated some specific metal features that seemed highly magnified for Cd compared with Pb and Ni. FORESTS 01/08/19 Contribution of Forest Stewardship Council Certification to Sustainable Forest Management of State Forests in Selected Southeast European Countries. In recent decades, the concept of forest certification under the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) has been widely adopted in selected Southeast European countries (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia, and Slovenia).

FORESTS 01/08/19 Contribution of Forest Stewardship Council Certification to Sustainable Forest Management of State Forests in Selected Southeast European Countries

As sustainability is traditionally recognised as a leading principle in the forest management doctrine in these countries, the aim of this study was to understand whether, and how, FSC forest certification contributes to the sustainable management of state forests. The research was carried out in two phases. First, in order to assess forest management compliance with FSC standard, non-conformities for the period 2014–2018, identified in audit Public Summary Reports, were analysed in all public companies that managed state-owned forests in selected countries.

NATURE 26/11/18 Canopy mortality has doubled in Europe’s temperate forests over the last three decades. CLIMATE-KIC - 2018 - New European research-backed programme aims to increase sustainable forestry. EIT Climate-KIC is to launch an ambitious forestry innovation programme combining bio-economy, conservation and sequestration approaches to help deliver European mitigation targets.

CLIMATE-KIC - 2018 - New European research-backed programme aims to increase sustainable forestry

The programme will aim to bring more of Europe’s privately owned, unmanaged forests into sustainable production through increased investment, new forest management techniques, the use of advanced geo-data for monitoring and traceability, and the creation of bio-based wood construction value chains to replace fossil-based material use. Evidence base The plans are underpinned by a body of new research initiated by Climate-KIC and partners including leading institutions Wageningen University (Netherlands), INRA (France), Lund University (Sweden), and I4CE (France). The report underlines how greater collaboration and knowledge-sharing between public and private decision-makers is needed to deliver climate-smart forestry solutions that go beyond simple carbon sequestration.
