PARLEMENT EUROPEEN - Réponse à question E-001459-17 Obesity

Almost every sixth EU citizen is technically obese. Obesity is a complex disease, and it is the cause of many health problems, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, certain types of cancer, and mental illnesses. The growing prevalence of obesity adds to health system costs for the Member States, but it also affects labour supply in the market, as a rise in obesity among the working age population results in a decline in productivity.

World Health Organisation data indicate that the number of obese EU citizens will grow considerably if the problem continues to be neglected. The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development estimates that healthcare costs for an obese person are 25% higher than healthcare costs for a person whose weight is normal. WORLD OBESITY - An atlas of European projects and interventions for obesity prevention in adults

The projects and interventions selected are aimed primarily at adults, and have more than one approach within them by including both individual and environmental components. The interventions are a selection of what is available. We have not included every possible intervention (some are likely to be unknown to us) but we have tried to show the range of activities that have been developed and are active during the time of data collection. For each project or intervention we have considered the Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation and Maintenance (RE-AIM) aspects and we have given a summary where we have information available.

The Intervention Atlas is also available in French here policy data not available. 8th Annual Conference of the Agricultural Economics Society, AgroParisTech, Paris, France 9-11 April 2014 On the Nexus between Economic and Obesity Crisis in Spain: Parametric and Nonparametric Analysis of the Role of Economic Factors on Obesity Prevalenc. 20MINUTES 01/06/16 Europe: Le surpoids touche un tiers des enfants âgés de six à neuf ans. Every year almost three million people in the EU die due to weight-related diseases. Moreover, around 7% of EU Member States' healthcare budgets are spent on treating weight problems. The EU Member States currently base their policies in this area on the action plan on Childhood Obesity adopted in 2014. The Joint Action on Nutrition and Physical Activity was started in September 2015. 1. 2. 3. PARLEMENT EUROPEEN - Réponse à question E-014432-15 Obesity. On the other hand, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as well as some European centers reported the prevalence of overweight and obesity plateauing and even decreasing [26]. This study showed that the prevalence of underweight, overweight, and obesity among 7–17 years old children and adolescents was 9.4, 12.6, and 4.1 %, respectively, with a higher prevalence among boys. These results are in line with the results of other studies reporting higher rates of overweight or obesity in boys than girls [10], [27], [28]. As compared with the data published in other countries, Lithuania still has the lowest prevalence of overweight and obesity among 7–17 years old children and adolescents in Europe, being similar to that in Poland and Latvia [29], [30].

World obesity prevalence among males.[1] World obesity prevalence among females.[1] Obesity rates as a percentages of total population in OECD member countries in the years 1996–2003.[2] For thousands of years obesity was rarely seen.[3] It was not until the 20th century that it became common, so much so that in 1997 the World Health Organization (WHO) formally recognized obesity as a global epidemic.[4] As of 2005 the WHO estimates that at least 400 million adults (9.8%) are obese, with higher rates among women than men.[5] As of 2008, The World Health Organization claimed that 1.5 billion adults, 20 and older, were overweight and of these over 200 million men and nearly 300 million women were obese.[6] The rate of obesity also increases with age at least up to 50 or 60 years old.[7] The top five countries with the highest obesity rates are as followed:

Obesity increases the risk of contracting type-2 diabetes, which can cause further conditions such as cardiovascular problems, kidney failure and can lead to amputations and blindness. The cost of treating such conditions is estimated at between 10 % and 15 % of healthcare expenditure. According to a recent study, Spain has a higher percentage of child obesity that the USA; 19 % as opposed to 16 %, a rate that has tripled in 30 years(2). It is said that 80 % of obese children continue to suffer from this problem into adulthood. 1. 2. 3.
