PARLEMENT EUROPEEN - Réponse à question E-001459-17 Obesity. Europe is facing a serious obesity problem.
Almost every sixth EU citizen is technically obese. Obesity is a complex disease, and it is the cause of many health problems, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, certain types of cancer, and mental illnesses. The growing prevalence of obesity adds to health system costs for the Member States, but it also affects labour supply in the market, as a rise in obesity among the working age population results in a decline in productivity.
World Health Organisation data indicate that the number of obese EU citizens will grow considerably if the problem continues to be neglected. The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development estimates that healthcare costs for an obese person are 25% higher than healthcare costs for a person whose weight is normal. EUROPE 24/02/14 EU Action Plan on Childhood Obesity 2014-2020. WORLD OBESITY - An atlas of European projects and interventions for obesity prevention in adults. An atlas of European projects and interventions for obesity prevention in adults The SPOTLIGHT project has undertaken a Europe-wide survey to provide an overview of projects and interventions to prevent adult obesity through improving diet and physical activity in the region.
The projects and interventions selected are aimed primarily at adults, and have more than one approach within them by including both individual and environmental components. The interventions are a selection of what is available. We have not included every possible intervention (some are likely to be unknown to us) but we have tried to show the range of activities that have been developed and are active during the time of data collection. For each project or intervention we have considered the Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation and Maintenance (RE-AIM) aspects and we have given a summary where we have information available.

Obesity rates as a percentages of total population in OECD member countries in the years 1996–2003. For thousands of years obesity was rarely seen. It was not until the 20th century that it became common, so much so that in 1997 the World Health Organization (WHO) formally recognized obesity as a global epidemic. As of 2005 the WHO estimates that at least 400 million adults (9.8%) are obese, with higher rates among women than men. As of 2008, The World Health Organization claimed that 1.5 billion adults, 20 and older, were overweight and of these over 200 million men and nearly 300 million women were obese. The rate of obesity also increases with age at least up to 50 or 60 years old. The top five countries with the highest obesity rates are as followed:
