It results in higher healthcare costs, prolonged hospital stays, treatment failures and sometimes death. In 2012, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) launched the the “European Survey on Carbapenamase-Producing Enterobacteriaceae''' (EuSCAPE) project with the aim to gather data on the occurrence of CPE in Europe and build laboratory capacity for their diagnosis and for surveillance.

The survey showed that on average in Europe, 1.3 patients per 10 000 hospital admissions had a carbapenemase-producing K. pneumoniae or E. coli infection, with the highest incidence found in southern and southeastern Europe. In K. pneumoniae, the most frequently detected carbapenamases were KPC enzymes, followed by OXA-48-like, NDM and VIM, while in E. coli, there were OXA-48-like enzymes followed by NDM and KPC.

Multi-resistant Escherichia coli and mycotic aneurysm: two case reports

He had a long term catheter for a prostate problem and his past history included a myocardial infarction in 2001, followed by a series of small strokes. As a result of these, he had a mild residual left hemiparesis and had received a stent to his right carotid artery. On examination he was pyrexial (39.2°C) with otherwise normal vital signs and no new findings. Investigations showed a low white cell count (2.5 × 109/litre) and raised inflammatory markers, with an ESR of 84 mm/hr and C-reactive protein of 176 mg/l. Cultures of blood and urine grew E. coli resistant to all cephalosporins and fluoroquinolones but susceptible to meropenem. A computed tomography (CT) scan was requested to explore the possibility of lymphoma or a deep abscess. Figure 1. Figure 2. Figure 3.
