Campylobacteriosis was the most commonly reported zoonosis. After several years of an increasing European Union (EU) trend, the human campylobacteriosis notification rate has stabilised. In food and animals no EU trends were observed and the occurrence of Campylobacter continued to be high in broiler meat at EU level. Campylobacteriosis was the most commonly reported zoonosis with 220,209 confirmed human cases. The occurrence of Campylobacter continued to be high in broiler meat at EU level. The decreasing trend in confirmed salmonellosis cases in humans continued with a total of 95,548 cases in 2011. La tendance observée dans les cas d’Escherichia coli productrice de vérocytotoxines (STEC/VTEC) signalés chez l’homme est également en hausse depuis 2008 et a encore été renforcée en raison du foyer épidémique survenu durant l’été 2011. Les cas humains de Salmonella ont continué de baisser, affichant une diminution pour la septième année consécutive. Voilà certaines des principales conclusions mises en évidence dans le rapport annuel de 2011 sur les zoonoses et les foyers épidémiques d'origine alimentaire dans l'Union européenne, produit conjointement par l'Autorité européenne de sécurité des aliments et le Centre européen de prévention et de contrôle des maladies (ECDC).

This version replaces the previous one/s. The Community system for monitoring and collection of information on zoonoses was established by Council Directive 92/117/ECC. This Directive was replaced in 2004 by a new Directive 2003/99/EC, laying down revised rules for monitoring and reporting. The new Directive covers reporting of data on zoonotic agents in animals, foodstuffs and feedingstuffs, as well as on antimicrobial resistance and food-borne outbreaks. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is required to examine the data collected and to prepare the Community Summary Report. The plan drawn up by the Commission should be properly implemented in order to integrate the data on zoonoses cases in humans into the Summary Report.

There is also a need for further harmonization of monitoring and reporting schemes to improve the quality and comparability of the data collected. The infection can be acquired directly from animals, or through the ingestion of contaminated foodstuffs. The severity of these diseases in humans can vary from mild symptoms to life-threatening conditions. In order to prevent zoonoses from occurring, it is important to identify which animals and foodstuffs are the main sources of infections. For this purpose and to follow the developments on food safety in the European Union, information aimed at protecting human health is collected and analysed from all European Union Member States. In 2007, 27 Member States submitted information on the occurrence of zoonoses and zoonotic agents to the European Commission and the European Food Safety Authority. The number of listeriosis cases in humans remained at the same level as in 2006 with 1,554 confirmed cases recorded in 2007. Surveillance biologique.
