PARLEMENT EUROPEEN - réponse à question E-009527-16 Toxicity of farmed salmon (PCB)

Fed with a combination of synthetic feed, consisting of corn, poultry, pork, vitamins and antibiotics, among other ingredients, farm-raised fish may pose a threat to consumers’ health. Research has proven that processed dry feed is the most toxic ingredient consumed by farmed fish. High contamination levels in these specific fish come from dioxins, PCBs and a mix of drugs and extremely dangerous chemicals, which could cause permanent damage to the human body. At the same time, these substances are linked to autism and immunodeficiency and endocrine disorders. PARLEMENT EUROPEEN - Réponse à question E-007669-16 Toxins in farmed fish from Norway. The EU imports salmon every year from Norwegian marine fish farms It is reported that there are huge piles of waste, some of them several metres high, beneath the fishing nets.

PARLEMENT EUROPEEN - Réponse à question E-007669-16 Toxins in farmed fish from Norway

The waste consists of a mixture of droppings, food remains and harmful chemicals such as PCBs, Aldrin, Dioxin, Toxaphene, Dieldrin, Ethoxyquin and Canthaxanthin. The last of these are added to redden the fish meat, as the salmon do not receive the natural foodstuffs they eat in the wild. All these chemicals are thought to be a reason why the salmon develop illnesses and genetic mutations and contain many harmful substances. The Commission has itself established, for example, that Canthaxanthin can damage vision. At the same time, farmed trout or salmon contain as much as 14-34% fat, much more than the natural levels of 5-7%, which is problematic as toxins accumulate in fat. — Can the Commission confirm that Norwegian farmed fish contain significantly more toxins than wild fish? Journal of Great Lakes Research Volume 40, Issue 3, September 2014 Trends of PCB concentrations in Lake Michigan coho and chinook salmon, 1975–2010

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has quantified total PCB concentrations in Lake Michigan chinook (n = 765) and coho (n = 393) salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha and Oncorhynchus kisutch, respectively) filets since 1975. We analyzed these data to estimate trends in PCB concentrations in these fish (1975–2010). We used generalized linear models with a gamma error distribution and log link fit to the untransformed concentrations. Index words PCBs; Lake Michigan; Coho; Chinook; Salmon; Temporal trends Introduction Millions of people depend on the Great Lakes for food, drinking water, recreation, and income generation. Natives to the Pacific Coast, chinook and coho salmon were first introduced into the Great Lakes beginning in the late 1800s.

Health Risks Associated with Consuming Farm-Raised Salmon. In the most comprehensive analysis of farmed and wild salmon to date, researchers analyzed toxic contaminants in approximately 700 farmed and wild salmon (totaling 2 metric tons) collected from around the world to be representative of the salmon typically available to consumers.
