Introduction Horn flies, Haematobia irritans, are one of the most damaging pests of cattle in the United States. Each year they inflict over 876 million U.S. dollars in losses to U.S. cattle producers . To curb these losses, horn flies are typically controlled by the use of synthetic insecticides applied to animal hosts , most commonly through the use of insecticide-impregnated ear tags. Resistance developed after the initial widespread use of ear tags in the early 1980s and has continued to the present .
Resistance in horn fly populations was first reported to the pyrethroid fenvalerate , and resistance was mitigated through the use of S,S,S-tributyl phosphorotrithioate (DEF) and piperonyl butoxide (PBO) , suggesting the resistance was due to an up-regulation of detoxification enzymes.

Download in PDF Version September 2015 Summary of the situation In March 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) evaluated the carcinogenicity of the organophosphorus insecticides diazinon, malathion, and glyphosate and reclassified them as "probably carcinogenic to humans" (Group 2A).
IARC is the specialized cancer agency of the World Health Organization (WHO). The agency is an inter-disciplinary group that brings together skills in epidemiology, laboratory sciences and biostatistics to identify the causes of cancer so that preventive measures may be adopted and the burden of disease and associated suffering reduced. AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT 26/02/16 Diazinon Chemical Review. In 2000, the APVMA released the diazinon draft report, which identified concerns over the potential risks to workers from some use patterns and a lack of sufficient data to support some use patterns and agricultural practices.
Because of these data gaps, we asked registrants and key user groups to provide more data to support the use of this chemical. In 2002, the APVMA released the revised diazinon draft report after receiving additional information and comments after the publication of the initial draft report. We determined that emulsifiable concentrate (EC) products without stabiliser posed an undue hazard to the safety of people and animals as these products could break down to product highly toxic impurities.
We also determined that stabilised EC products used on companion animals posed an undue hazard to the environment. In June 2006, the APVMA released the Diazinon preliminary findings review report, volume 2. The APVMA’s key preliminary findings for part 2 were that: EPA 07/04/16 Biological Evaluation Chapters for Diazinon. Abstract The behaviour of diazinon in the soil determines the likelihood of further pollution incidents, particularly leaching to water. The most significant processes in the control of the fate of diazinon in the soil are microbial degradation and the formation of bound residues. Soils from four sites in the UK were amended with diazinon and its 14C labelled analogue and incubated for 100 days. Diazinon (IUPAC name: O,O-Diethyl O-[4-methyl-6-(propan-2-yl)pyrimidin-2-yl] phosphorothioate, INN - Dimpylate), a colorless to dark brown liquid, is a thiophosphoric acid ester developed in 1952 by Ciba-Geigy, a Swiss chemical company (later Novartis and then Syngenta). It is a nonsystemic organophosphate insecticide formerly used to control cockroaches, silverfish, ants, and fleas in residential, non-food buildings. Diazinon was heavily used during the 1970s and early 1980s for general-purpose gardening use and indoor pest control. A bait form was used to control scavenger wasps in the western U.S. Diazinon is used in flea collars for domestic pets in Australia and New Zealand. Residential uses of diazinon were outlawed in the U.S. in 2004 but it is still approved for agricultural uses.
