Aux pH que l’on rencontre normalement dans l’environnement, l’hydrolyse ne constitue pas une voie importante de dégradation. Le diazinon se photolyse très lentement dans l’eau (demi-vie = 84,5 j). À la surface du sol, la photolyse pourrait constituer une voie importante de dégradation avec une demi-vie de 20 heures. Introduction Horn flies, Haematobia irritans, are one of the most damaging pests of cattle in the United States. Each year they inflict over 876 million U.S. dollars in losses to U.S. cattle producers [1]. To curb these losses, horn flies are typically controlled by the use of synthetic insecticides applied to animal hosts [2], most commonly through the use of insecticide-impregnated ear tags. Resistance developed after the initial widespread use of ear tags in the early 1980s and has continued to the present [3].

Resistance in horn fly populations was first reported to the pyrethroid fenvalerate [4], and resistance was mitigated through the use of S,S,S-tributyl phosphorotrithioate (DEF) and piperonyl butoxide (PBO) [4], suggesting the resistance was due to an up-regulation of detoxification enzymes. L'APE, l'Agence gouvernementale américaine de protection de l'environnement, a publié son premier rapport sur l'effet néfaste des pesticides sur la faune et la flore sauvage. D'après ses récentes évaluations, trois pesticides se révèlent extrêmement dangereux pour une grande majorité de plantes et d'animaux menacés, comme listés dans la liste des espèces en danger de l'Endangered Species Act. Sur près de 1.800 espèces répertoriées, 97% subiraient, directement ou indirectement, les effets nocifs du malathion et du chlorpyrifos. 79% seraient atteintes par ceux du diazinon, troisième pesticide complétant le trio évoqué.

We also determined that stabilised EC products used on companion animals posed an undue hazard to the environment. Diazinon (IUPAC name: O,O-Diethyl O-[4-methyl-6-(propan-2-yl)pyrimidin-2-yl] phosphorothioate, INN - Dimpylate), a colorless to dark brown liquid, is a thiophosphoric acid ester developed in 1952 by Ciba-Geigy, a Swiss chemical company (later Novartis and then Syngenta). It is a nonsystemic organophosphate insecticide formerly used to control cockroaches, silverfish, ants, and fleas in residential, non-food buildings. Diazinon was heavily used during the 1970s and early 1980s for general-purpose gardening use and indoor pest control. A bait form was used to control scavenger wasps in the western U.S. Diazinon is used in flea collars for domestic pets in Australia and New Zealand. Residential uses of diazinon were outlawed in the U.S. in 2004 but it is still approved for agricultural uses.
