However, such suspension methods do not fully imitate real-life conditions. To address this issue, carrier methods have been developed, in which microorganisms are applied to the surface of a carrier (e.g., stainless steel, glass and polyvinyl chloride (PVC)) and then dried. While the virus' geometry and infection strategy is generally understood, little is known about its physical integrity. A new study by researchers in MIT's Department of Mechanical Engineering suggests that coronaviruses may be vulnerable to ultrasound vibrations, within the frequencies used in medical diagnostic imaging. Through computer simulations, the team has modeled the virus' mechanical response to vibrations across a range of ultrasound frequencies. They found that vibrations between 25 and 100 megahertz triggered the virus' shell and spikes to collapse and start to rupture within a fraction of a millisecond.

A recent survey from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in their Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report has highlighted a frightening truth about the general public: A surprising number of people do not know how to handle cleaning products properly. In fact, the survey found that about one in three adults were engaging in “high-risk” activities to prevent COVID-19. If you’re wondering what constitutes high-risk, one of the more common transgressions was washing fruits and vegetables with bleach.
