A randomized controlled trial quantified the efficacy of indoor residual spraying (IRS) against adult Ae. aegypti in houses treated with either deltamethrin (to which local Ae. aegypti expressed a high degree of resistance) or bendiocarb (to which local Ae. aegypti were fully susceptible) as compared to untreated control houses. All adult Ae. aegypti infestation indices during 3 months post-spraying were significantly lower in houses treated with bendiocarb compared to untreated houses (odds ratio <0.75; incidence rate ratio < 0.65) whereas no statistically significant difference was detected between the untreated and the deltamethrin-treated houses. On average, bendiocarb spraying reduced Ae. aegypti abundance by 60% during a 3-month period. Author summary Introduction Materials and methods Study area Study design Results. Etude de l'activité d'une formulation à 50‰ de deltaméthrine sur Stomoxys calcitrans à la Réunion : résistance et rémanence. Thèse d'exercice, Ecole Nationale Vétérinaire de Toulouse - ENVT, 2006, 98 p. Les pullulations de stomoxes représentent un véritable fléau pour le bétail réunionnais par les effets pathogènes directs et indirects de ces diptères hématophages. L objectif de cette étude était d évaluer l'efficacité de la deltaméthrine après onze années d utilisation quasi-exclusive de cet insecticide à la Réunion. Un test biologique de dépistage des résistances par application tarsale de deltaméthrine n a pas mis en évidence de différences significatives de sensibilité des isolats de stomoxes réunionnais, mais un facteur de résistance de 17,8 a été calculé en prenant pour référence la sensibilité d une souche mauricienne. The worldwide studies of its insecticide resistance have demonstrated a strong loss of susceptibility to pyrethroids, the major class of insecticide used for vector control. French overseas territories such as French Guiana (South America), Guadeloupe islands (Lesser Antilles) as well as New Caledonia (Pacific Ocean), have encountered such resistance. Methodology/Principal Findings We initiated a research program on the pyrethroid resistance in French Guiana, Guadeloupe and New Caledonia. Conclusion /significance This study highlighted the presence of a common set of differentially up-regulated detoxifying genes, mainly cytochrome P450 genes in all three populations.
