Understanding pig producer perspectives in the pig sector is a key component to developing new systems of data capture and utilisation in pig meat production. In order to achieve this objective, telephone interviews were conducted with pig producers as part of a larger social science study that also involved interviews and focus groups with a range of stakeholders involved in the pig production industry across ROI and NI. This study identified two global themes attributable to the attitudes of pig producers towards the development of MI as a health and welfare diagnostic tool. The first theme related to producer aspirations, with general agreement among all producers on the potential usefulness and benefit of such a tool. Limitations of the study. L’AFSCA souhaite rendre public les résultats des enquêtes suite aux plaintes introduites par l’organisation de défense des animaux « Bite Back » concernant des non conformités en matière de bien-être animal dans plusieurs élevages porcins.

AFSCA 17/12/13 Résultats des inspections bien-être animal dans les exploitations porcines.

Une plainte a été introduite contre 9 exploitations agricoles. L’AFSCA a mené les enquêtes nécessaires. Les résultats de ces inspections étaient conformes, il n’y a pas eu de constat de non-conformité en matière de bien-être animal au moment du contrôle. Deux plaintes étaient infondées. En effet une des entreprises ne détient plus de porcs depuis mai 2013 et une autre entreprise n’existe plus à l’adresse indiquée (cette plainte a été retirée par « Bite Back ») et les images proviennent d’une autre exploitation qui a également été contrôlée sans que des non-conformités n’aient été détectées. En 2012, l’Agence alimentaire a réalisé 717 inspections sur le bien-être dans les élevages porcins. 90% de ces inspections étaient conformes. The Directive 2008/120/EC lays down minimum standards for the protection of pigs. The ban of individual sow stalls was decided in 2001 with the adoption of a specific Directive on the welfare of pigs. A transitional period of 12 years was allowed to adapt to the new systems. Why this new EU requirement on animal welfare? The ban on sow stalls comes in response to stakeholders' demand – in particular EU citizens/consumers – to improve food quality and animal health.
