ANIMALS 04/04/21 Heat Stress and Goat Welfare: Adaptation and Production Considerations. This review attempted to collate and synthesize information on goat welfare and production constraints during heat stress exposure.
Among the farm animals, goats arguably are considered the best-suited animals to survive in tropical climates. Heat stress was found to negatively influence growth, milk and meat production and compromised the immune response, thereby significantly reducing goats’ welfare under extensive conditions and transportation. Although considered extremely adapted to tropical climates, their production can be compromised to cope with heat stress. Therefore, information on goat adaptation and production performance during heat exposure could help assess their welfare. Such information would be valuable as the farming communities are often struggling in their efforts to assess animal welfare, especially in tropical regions. ►▼ Show Figures Figure 1. Thirty-two commercial sheep farms in Victoria, Australia were involved in this study. Of the 32 farms involved, 30 were visited twice (at mid-pregnancy and weaning), and 2 farms only once (both at weaning). In total, 62 visits were conducted and 6,200 ewes (aged 2–5 years) were examined using six animal-based indicators: body condition score (BCS), fleece condition, skin lesions, tail length, dag score and lameness. MPI_govt_nz 01/10/18 Sheep and Beef Cattle - Code of welfare. Animal Sentience 2019.227: Applied cognition research to improve sheep welfare. Abstract If a change is going to occur in the care and management of domestic sheep, there needs to be a collaborative effort across many disciplines.
This review by Marino & Merskin of the literature on cognitive processing in domestic sheep is limited by the inherent bias of the authors, including the impracticable goal of eliminating sheep production. Animal welfare concerns about the management of commercial sheep are valid; however, in order to make a difference, we need to develop an application for this knowledge about cognitive abilities in sheep. ANIMALS 28/11/18 Sheep Farmers’ Perception of Welfare and Pain Associated with Routine Husbandry Practices in Chile. Considering the public concern about the welfare of farm animals during routine husbandry practices, this study aimed to determine how husbandry practices are carried out in Chilean farms, sheep farmers’ perceptions of animal welfare and pain, and factors that affect them, as well as the level of agreement among farmers in the recognition of pain associated with these practices.
Using a self-administered survey, participants were asked about their sociodemographic information, how husbandry practices are carried out in their farms, and their pain perception for seven of these common husbandry procedures using a numerical rating scale (0 to 10). A total of 165 farmers completed the survey and perceived castration and tail docking as the most painful practices in lambs (median pain score 10 vs. 8, p < 0.05). Pain perception was associated with the method used for the specific husbandry practices, the farmers’ educational level, the farm size, and flock size (p < 0.05).

Cienc. Rural vol.47 no.9 Santa Maria 2017 Epub July 31, 2017 Indicators to assess goat welfare on-farm in the semiarid region of Brazilian Northeast. Cienc. Rural vol.47 no.12 Santa Maria Dec. 2017 Attitudes of South Brazilian sheep farmers to animal welfare and sentience. The total number of sheep in Brazil was estimated at 18 410 551 animals, being the Northeast region the greatest sheep producer (60.6%), followed by the South region (26.5%) (IBGE, 2015).
In the state of Parana, the total number of sheep was estimated at 614 749 animals; i.e., 3.3% of the total number of sheep in Brazil (IBGE, 2015). In Brazil, the number of sheep farms was estimated at 438 623, from a total of 365 754 owners (IBGE, 2006). In the state of Parana, there were 17 434 sheep farms and 15 960 owners (IBGE, 2006). Data provided by the Sheep Breeders Associations of Parana contained 312 contacts of sheep farmers. From these, 78 did not raise sheep in Paraná anymore, 48 could not be contacted through telephone or email, 24 did not want to participate in the survey and 14 contacts were duplicated from the same farmers. Demographic data The majority (84.5%; 125/148) was male farmers and 15.5%, female farmers (23/148).
