Environmental surveillance of wastewater supplements clinical surveillance for monitoring enteric virus circulation. However, while many environmental surveillance methods require liquid samples, some at-risk locations utilize pit latrines with waste characterized by high solids content. This study’s objective was to develop and evaluate enteric virus concentration protocols for high solids content samples.

Two existing protocols were modified and tested using poliovirus type 1 (PV1) seeded into primary sludge. Method 1 (M1) utilized acid adsorption, followed by 2 or 3 elutions (glycine/sodium chloride and/or threonine/sodium chloride), and skimmed milk flocculation. TAMPA, Fla. (July 20, 2016) – University of South Florida researchers investigating the aftermath of a September 2014 sewer line break in St. Petersburg have found dangerous antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the untreated wastewater that gushed into neighborhoods and into Boca Ciega Bay at a rate of 250 to 500 gallons per minute. Their findings, just published in the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology, raise several significant public health concerns. First, a strain of bacteria found in the water tested resistant to vancomycin, an antibiotic considered to be a “last resort” treatment for serious infections that do not respond to other antibiotics. The researchers sampled the water and soil for seven weeks following the spill from the broken sewer line which totaled about 500,000 gallons of released untreated sewage.

Cette écocité de 570 hectares, au nord de l'agglomération rennaise, devrait être achevée à l'horizon 2040 et accueillir 40 000 nouveaux habitants, dans 20 000 logements. La société propose de récupérer l'eau recueillie sur les toitures des futurs bâtiments, les eaux de pluie, l'eau de ruissellement et les "eaux grises" – issues des lavabos, douches et lave-linge – pour les réinjecter dans le circuit des toilettes, du lavage du linge et de l'arrosage. En France, traditionnellement, les habitations sont alimentées par de l'eau potable et, une fois usées, ces eaux grises ou noires – celles qui proviennent des toilettes – partent dans les égouts, sans distinction, ce qui rend difficile leur réutilisation.
