PARLEMENT EUROPEEN - Réponse à question E-002264-17 Budget for animal welfare package.

PARLEMENT EUROPEEN - Réponse à question E-005717-16 TTIP's effect on animal welfare. PARLEMENT EUROPEEN - Réponse à question E-015189-15 Applying EU animal welfare regulations to third-country livestock keepers. A comparison of various legal systems shows that the strictest animal welfare requirements in the world are currently in the EU, which means that the EU serves as an example in this area.

PARLEMENT EUROPEEN - Réponse à question E-015189-15 Applying EU animal welfare regulations to third-country livestock keepers

EU livestock keepers face a serious competitiveness problem because in many third world countries, livestock keepers have to comply with much less stringent requirements, which unfairly allows them to sell their products in the EU internal market at much lower prices. We have to require the people who export animal products into the EU to keep animals during the production of the given product in accordance with requirements that are the equivalent of the EU regulations. In my opinion, since the equivalence requirement is not defined with sufficient precision, many livestock keepers can easily bypass compliance with these stringent regulations.

It is for this reason that requirements matching EU regulations must also be stipulated in third world countries. 1. 2. 3. PARLEMENT EUROPEEN - Réponse à question E-011130-15 Animal welfare in China.

PARLEMENT EUROPEEN - Réponse à question E-004867-15 ‘Animal welfare is not an issue for Ukraine’ In a recent interview with the farm magazine Boerderij, the Ukrainian Minister of Agriculture Pavlenko stated that the matter of EU animal welfare requirements ‘has not been raised’(1).

PARLEMENT EUROPEEN - Réponse à question E-004867-15 ‘Animal welfare is not an issue for Ukraine’

He was referring, among other things, to Ukrainian exports of battery eggs to the EU, for which Ukraine has the go-ahead under the EU association agreement. He also stated that animal welfare was not a serious issue for Ukraine and that it was not being addressed. How does this tie in with the Commission’s assurance that Ukraine is implementing a strategy of ‘gradually adapting its sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) legislation, including animal welfare, to that of the EU? ’ (E-007927/2014) 1. 2. 3. PARLEMENT EUROPEEN - Réponse à question E-010293-14 Lithuanian law on the welfare and protection of animals — slaughter of animals without stunning. Until the recent adoption of an amendment signed by the Lithuanian President on 30 September 2014, Article 17.2 of Lithuania’s law on the welfare and protection of animals (VIII-5 500) prohibited the slaughter of animals without stunning.

PARLEMENT EUROPEEN - Réponse à question E-010293-14 Lithuanian law on the welfare and protection of animals — slaughter of animals without stunning

Article 4(1) of Council Regulation (EC) No 1099/2009 on the protection of animals at the time of killing requires animals to be stunned before slaughter. Article 4(4) provides for a derogation from this requirement in the case of animals ‘subject to particular methods of slaughter prescribed by religious rites’. It is clear from Recital 18 of Regulation 1099/2009 and from the preamble to, and Article 10 of, the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights that the purpose of Article 4(4) of the regulation is to enable people living in the EU whose religious beliefs oppose stunning to be able to eat meat from animals that have not been stunned before slaughter.
