Dogs as New Hosts for the Emerging Zoonotic Pathogen Anaplasma capra in China. Introduction Vector-borne diseases are major causes of morbidity and mortality in dogs and are potentially of great public health importance because of their zoonotic nature and the role of pets as reservoirs (Xu et al., 2015; Cui et al., 2017; Maggi and Krämer, 2019).

Dogs as New Hosts for the Emerging Zoonotic Pathogen Anaplasma capra in China

In the last few years, the number and range of species kept as companion animals have risen, and they are maintaining increasingly close interactions with humans in industrialized societies (Cito et al., 2016). Although the phenomenon of all companion animals, especially dogs and cats, sharing the same environment as humans is long-standing (Fang et al., 2015; Cui et al., 2017), urbanization has affected the emergence and increasing incidence of tick-borne diseases (TBD) (Fang et al., 2015).

Together, these changes in human activity and the increased contact between humans, their pets, and nature have contributed to the rising abundance of tick exposure (Uspensky, 2014; Fang et al., 2015). Materials and Methods.

Materials and methods Study group design This study was a parallel group design, single centre, randomised, controlled, long-term Good Clinical Practice (GCP) (EMEA 2002) efficacy study involving 14 beagle dogs, conducted at the Animal Centre of Bayer Animal Health, Monheim, Germany.

Study design and experimental procedures were approved by the LANUV-Regional authority for nature, environment and consumer protection in North Rhine-Westphalia. Blinding was achieved by separation of function: persons that performed the post-treatment laboratory analysis were different from those that performed group allocation, treatment and sampling. Fourteen healthy male and female beagle dogs of at least 17 months of age, with a body weight of 9.0 to 12.2 kg and negative for Bbsl- and Ap-specific antibodies (the same test systems used as for serological testing during the study, see below under “Laboratory procedures”) from a predecessor study, were included in the study. PARASITES & VECTORS 14/10/19 Trends in canine seroprevalence to Borrelia burgdorferi and Anaplasma spp. in the eastern USA, 2010–2017.

Lyme borreliosis (LB) and anaplasmosis (AN) are common among people and dogs in much of the eastern USA, and several studies document a growing risk of infection concomitant with increasing tick populations and continued expansion of the geographical area where these pathogens are known to be transmitted [4, 21,22,23,24].

Canine serology has been shown to be an indicator of human disease risk in a given region [13, 14, 25]. Our analysis of canine serologic data confirmed increasing trends in seroprevalence of Bb and Anaplasma spp. in several areas, including northern New England, upstate New York, and western Pennsylvania, as well as in some southern states where the I. scapularis-pathogen-reservoir host maintenance cycles necessary to maintain these agents have apparently only recently become established [26, 27]. Introduction Recently, the incidence of tick-borne diseases in humans and animals have increased due to several factors, which in association favor the chances of contact among wild animals and associated ectoparasites, domestic animals and humans.

FRONT. VET. SCI. 23/11/18 Diversity of Anaplasma and Ehrlichia/Neoehrlichia Agents in Terrestrial Wild Carnivores Worldwide: Implications for Human and Domestic Animal Health and Wildlife Conservation

The bi-directional flow of tick-borne parasites may occur from wildlife to domestic carnivores and vice-versa (1). Wild and domestic carnivores are considered the primary source of tick-borne zoonotic agents to humans. The dynamic of tick-borne agents transmission has been driven by different vertebrate host species living in sympatry. In this scenario, the overlapping of different species' ecological niches creates opportunities to parasites spread their geographical distribution, abundance and host range. Among emergent tick-borne pathogens, agents belonging to family Anaplasmataceae (Order Rickettsiales) agents stand out due their worldwide distribution and zoonotic potential. Anaplasma Bovis. Abstract Canine anaplasmosis is regarded as an infection by Anaplasma platys rather than zoonotic Anaplasma phagocytophilum in subtropical areas based on the assumption that the common dog tick species is Rhipicephalus sanguineus, which transmits E. canis and presumably A. platys.

PLOS 10/10/14 Ehrlichia chaffeensis Infection in the Reservoir Host (White-Tailed Deer) and in an Incidental Host (Dog) Is Impacted by Its Prior Growth in Macrophage and Tick Cell Environments. Abstract Ehrlichia chaffeensis, transmitted from Amblyomma americanum ticks, causes human monocytic ehrlichiosis. It also infects white-tailed deer, dogs and several other vertebrates. Deer are its reservoir hosts, while humans and dogs are incidental hosts.

E. chaffeensis protein expression is influenced by its growth in macrophages and tick cells. We report here infection progression in deer or dogs infected intravenously with macrophage- or tick cell-grown E. chaffeensis or by tick transmission in deer. PARASITES & VECTORS 29/07/16 Countrywide serological evaluation of canine prevalence for Anaplasma spp., Borrelia burgdorferi (sensu lato), Dirofilaria immitis and Ehrlichia canis in Mexico. Countrywide serological evaluation for four CVBD agents was carried out in Mexico. The regions described in the study presented here resulted from a geoeconomic division of the country. This classification is not coincidental with a climatic division, which according to humidity and temperature categorizes the country into areas with a warm wet, warm humid, dry, very dry, mild humid and mild wet climate (Fig. 2) [21]. Seropositivity values for Anaplasma spp., B. burgdorferi (sensu lato), D. immitis and E. canis reported here must be interpreted as current infection with or previous exposure to the pathogens under assessment.

Positive dogs to Anaplasma spp. were 9.9 %, with the highest prevalence detected in the northwestern (16.4 %) and lowest in the northcentral states of the country (0.6 %). Rev. Bras. Parasitol.
