EUROPE 26/08/16 RASFF Annual Report 2015.

A key tool to ensure the cross-border follow of information to swiftly react when risks to public health are detected in the food chain is RASFF – the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed. Created in 1979, RASFF enables information to be shared efficiently between its members (EU-28 national food safety authorities, Commission, EFSA, ESA, Norway, Liechtenstein, Iceland and Switzerland) and provides a round-the-clock service to ensure that urgent notifications are sent, received and responded to collectively and efficiently. Thanks to RASFF, many food safety risks had been averted before they could have been harmful to European consumers.

Vital information exchanged through RASFF can lead to products being recalled from the market. Download the RASFF annual report 2015 Access the RASFF portal. NORWEGIAN SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE FOR FOOD SAFETY 04/12/14 An overview of risk assessments of «Other Substances»

The Norwegian Food Safety Authority (NFSA) will use the report in their work to ensure safe use of "other substances" in food, drinks and food supplements. "Other substances" includes plant substances, fatty acids, amino acids and related substances, substances in the body, fiber and prebiotics, and probiotics. “Other substances" does not include vitamins and minerals. “Other substances” are added to food supplements, sports products and energy drinks to have a positive health effect, however, the substances can also have harmful effects and the type and extent of the negative health effect is dependent on the substance and the quantity consumed.

NFSA aims to develop a national regulation of “other substances”. An external report, commissioned by EFSA, analysed 219 opinions published by the Scientific Committee and Panels to recommend possible ways of improving the expression and communication of risk and/or uncertainties in the selected opinions. The Scientific Committee concluded that risk assessment terminology is not fully harmonised within EFSA. In part this is caused by sectoral legislation defining specific terminology and international standards for specific fields of risk assessment and thus for specific Panels.
