Actualités. FOOD CONTROL - 2012 - Aflatoxin contamination in pistachio nuts: A farm to storage study. Abstract The aim of this study was to follow the whole production chain of pistachio nuts from farm to storage and determine the production steps, the conditions and/or handling practices that affect aflatoxin production in Greek pistachio nuts.
Eighty trees from four pistachio orchards (20 trees from each orchard) of the Greek variety Pistachia vera cv Aegina were selected for monitoring and sampling. Five samples were taken from every orchard for aflatoxin analysis. The first sample was taken at early maturity on 31st of July, the second at maturity on 13th of August, the third at harvest (20th–30th August), the fourth at the end of drying and the last at storage (45 days after drying). The results showed that the most critical step for aflatoxin contamination is maturity because it was the first stage that aflatoxin was detected above permitted limits ranging from 11 μg/kg to 1361 μg/kg among orchards.

UC Davis plant pathologist Themis Michailides and his team of researchers at Kearney discovered how to expose pistachio trees to the spores of a beneficial fungus that displaces the fungi that produce aflatoxin.
Displacing aflatoxigenic fungi with a beneficial fungus has never before been done in tree crops. “We’ve gotten great results,” Michailides said. Abstract An efficient monitoring system for sampling, analyzing and issuing the export certificates for pistachio consignments has been established in Iran in recent years.
Accordingly, 3181 commercial raw pistachio nut lots were supplied for testing for European export certification since January 2009 till December 2011. Aflatoxin analysis was carried out by high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection after immunoaffinity column clean up with recoveries ranging from 77 to 99%. Amongst 8203 sub-samples analyzed, aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) was detected in 1921 cases (23.4%) with the mean and median values of 2.18 ± 13.1 ng/g and <LOD, respectively. Total aflatoxin (AFT) was detected in 1927 sub-samples (23.5%) with the mean and median values of 2.42 ± 14.7 ng/g and <LOD, respectively. Highlights Keywords.
