THE STAR 24/10/11 Leap in demand for frog meat

IT WAS the strangest place to hear the wail of a cat in heat: a former pig farm with still-intact concrete pens containing hundreds upon hundreds of hopping frogs. And these are bullfrogs, to be precise. As its name suggests, they croak like a bull, not meow like a cat. Just what is going on? The owner of the 1,018sqm bullfrog farm, who wants to be known as just Pang, grins knowingly. His knowledge is understandable. Dr C.K. A veterinarian by training, Lim was spurred to do some research on his own. He found that bullfrog farming was a viable alternative and introduced it to a number of pig farmers – and that was how an agricultural disaster became a catalyst for the bullfrog farming industry in Malaysia. However, frog farming is nothing new. It was only after years of selective breeding that the American bullfrogs reared by the Taiwanese started accepting pellets as food. It wasn’t always that way.

If there are young children in your home, reptiles and amphibians might not be safe pets for your family. Hundreds of people have become ill in several ongoing, nationwide Salmonella outbreaks linked to small turtles. Most victims are children under 5 years old. CDC warns parents[PDF - 341KB] to keep small turtles and other reptiles away from young children. Reptiles and amphibians are popular pets with many families. Iowa is a heavily modified landscape where 90% of the historic wetland area has been converted to row crop agriculture. In Iowa, the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP) strategically restores wetlands to reduce nitrogen loads in tile drainage effluent. INDIANA UNIVERSITY - 2014 - Thèse en ligne : The Effects of Water and Habitat Quality on Amphibian Assemblages in Agricultural Ditches

Constructed to improve agricultural productivity, there has been little attention given to their role in providing habitat to freshwater biota. The purpose of my study was to examine the relationship between the composition of amphibian assemblages that use ditch systems and water and habitat quality in a portion of the Cedar Creek watershed in northeastern Indiana and the Upper Big Walnut Creek Watershed in Ohio. Instream habitat, water chemistry, and amphibian assemblages were characterized at 14 sites sampled three times per year for two years. Principal components analysis was used to identify variables that contributed most to variation within habitat and water quality categories. Matt Allender, DVM, PhD, of the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, along with Matt Gray, PhD, from the University of Tennessee, co-chair the team of biologists, veterinarians, and wildlife managers working in government agencies, private organizations, universities, and zoos throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The purpose of the group is to facilitate communication and collaborative response to outbreaks of disease among native herpetofauna: frogs, salamanders, snakes, lizards, and turtles. Viruses, fungi, protozoans, bacteria, and parasites have all appeared recently, resulting in the deaths of a few individual animals in some cases and in the loss of entire populations and even species extinction in others. PLOS 31/10/12 Disease Risk in Temperate Amphibian Populations Is Higher at Closed-Canopy Sites. Habitat loss and chytridiomycosis (a disease caused by the chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis - Bd) are major drivers of amphibian declines worldwide.

Habitat loss regulates host-pathogen interactions by altering biotic and abiotic factors directly linked to both host and pathogen fitness. Therefore, studies investigating the links between natural vegetation and chytridiomycosis require integrative approaches to control for the multitude of possible interactions of biological and environmental variables in spatial epidemiology.

In this study, we quantified Bd infection dynamics across a gradient of natural vegetation and microclimates, looking for causal associations between vegetation cover, multiple microclimatic variables, and pathogen prevalence and infection intensity. UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER 07/04/15 Complex bacterial challenge in fight against deadly amphibian disease.

New research from The University of Manchester and the Institute of Zoology has shed light on the complex challenge facing scientists battling one of the world's most devastating animal diseases. Chytrid fungus (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis) is thought to be behind the decline or extinction of at least 200 species of frogs. It is also one of the reasons why 31% of amphibian species are currently listed as threatened by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. This latest study used bacteria from frogs in Belize to test the limitations of probiotic treatments. This form of treatment aims to introduce bacteria cultivated from amphibians that aren't affected by the disease to those at risk of infection to boost their immunity. JOURNAL OF ANIMAL AND VETERINARY ADVANCES - 2010 - Sensory and chemical changes in smoked frog (Rana esculanta) leg during cold.

PARLEMENT EUROPEEN - Réponse à question E-003031/2012 Europe's gourmets are endangering Asia’s frogs. According to a recent study, Europeans’ fondness of frogs’ legs is endangering frog stocks in Asia. The EU imports around 4.5 million kg of frogs’ legs from Asia per year, representing approximately 200 million frogs. According to the species-protection organisation Pro Wildlife, the consequences for the ecosystem are disastrous.

Entire frog populations are being wiped out, insects are becoming rampant and farmers feel obliged to use more pesticides. The delicacy of frogs’ legs is most popular in Belgium, which imported around 3.6 million kg in 2009 according to the study by Pro Wildlife and two US organisations. France and Italy come next, with imports of some 540 000 kg and 300 000 kg respectively. Indonesia was also the country that exported the most frogs’ legs in 2009: some 3.8 million kg. 1. 2. 3. 4.
