Vibrio harveyi is a pathogenic bacterium in aquaculture that regulates its bioluminescence and the production of virulence proteins through quorum sensing. The study of sponges Leucetta chagosensis, Dysidea sp. 2669 and Cacospongia sp. 2110 collected in French Polynesia, allowed the isolation of eight secondary metabolites including four new ones: isonaamine D, bis-isonaamidine A-Zn, leucettamine D and tuamotuolol. Their effects and their modes of action were evaluated on two phenotypes controlled by quorum sensing in V. harveyi: bioluminescence and production of metalloproteases. Les travaux de recherche engagés depuis de nombreuses années entre le SMEL et le LEMAR sur la pathologie de l’ormeau continuent de porter leurs fruits. Après avoir démontré que les conditions du milieu influencent la traduction du génome chez l’ormeau (en savoir +) ce sont des caractères physiologiques (hémolymphe et branchies) qui semblent différencier le développement de la pathologie due à Vibrio harveyi.

Ces résultats majeurs sont la principale explication de la résistance des populations d’ormeaux de Saint Malo alors que celles de Molène restent sensibles à la bactérie. Ces résultats viennent de faire l’objet d’une publication scientifique. Saint Malo et Molène, deux populations d’ormeaux bien distinctes… Depuis 1997, les populations de l’ormeau européen Haliotis tuberculata subissent des mortalités massives attribuées à la bactérie Vibrio harveyi. Les populations d’ormeaux actuelles plus résistantes à Saint Malo qu’à Molène Pour contacter le correspondant SMEL de cette étude.

NEW MICROBES AND NEW INFECTIONS - SEPT 2017 - First description of wound infection with Vibrio harveyi in Spain. Our case occurred in a 49-year-old man referred from the emergency room for cleaning and debridement of an infected wound in the right pretibial region. One week ago, during a trip to the Dominican Republic, he had experienced trauma from striking a bus step. The wound was sutured, and he was given antibiotic treatment with cefadroxil.

He subsequently swam in the sea without protecting the bandage from the seawater. At admission, the patient was afebrile and presented a wound on the front and another on the inside of the distal third of the right leg. He was receiving treatment for ankylosing spondylitis with steroids, infliximab and methotrexate. A wound swab was submitted for microbiologic examination. After overnight incubation, a Gram-negative rod, oxidase positive, was isolated and sent for routine identification and susceptibility testing (MicroScan; Beckman Coulter).
