PLOS 20/03/15 The Mediterranean and Black Sea Fisheries at Risk from Overexploitation. Abstract The status of the Mediterranean and Black Sea fisheries was evaluated for the period 1970-2010 on a subarea basis, using various indicators including the temporal variability of total landings, the number of recorded stocks, the mean trophic level of the catch, the fishing-in-balance index and the catch-based method of stock classification.

PLOS 20/03/15 The Mediterranean and Black Sea Fisheries at Risk from Overexploitation

All indicators confirmed that the fisheries resources of the Mediterranean and Black Sea are at risk from overexploitation. The pattern of exploitation and the state of stocks differed among the western (W), central (C) and eastern (E) Mediterranean subareas and the Black Sea (BS), with the E Mediterranean and BS fisheries being in a worst shape. They both build up giant scientific databases of ecosystems around the World. But it is a tricky process. This is the story of how researchers around the Black Sea are struggling to get the bigger picture out of tiny details. On the shores of the Danube River there is an unusual team. Romanian and Ukranian scientists are embarking on a common research trip. They are assessing the hydrological and biological health of the Danube Delta, a huge Biosphere Reserve shared by both countries. “Algae blooming is decreasing. Less industrial discharges and more efficient water treatment plants are indeed improving water quality in the Danube Delta.

SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH AND ESSAYS - JUNE 2010 - Policies on population, development and pollution of the Black Sea basin. The Black Sea is a closed basin which is connected to Aegean Sea through Bosporus and Dardanel Straits: The basin is encircled with six countries from which major rivers Danube, Dniester, Dnieper, Yeşilirmak, Kizilirmak and Sakarya run through to the sea, which carry and discharge pollution from industrial, agricultural and domestic sources to Black Sea Basin that grows cumulatively.

The EU funded project Baltic2Black, or, "Environmental monitoring of the Black Sea with focus on nutrient pollution", has for three years maintained close contact between expert networks in these regions, for sharing knowledge and developing new assessment methods for systematic monitoring of the largely similar marine environments. UNEP 20/08/14 Black Sea in Pollution Crisis: Georgian Communities Take Action. Following decades of pollutants entering its waters, the Black Sea is now facing an environmental crisis of extreme proportions, and is considered one of the most environmentally degraded regional seas in the world.

Every year, about 350 cubic km of river water pours into the Black Sea, which has resulted in soaring pollution levels, threatening marine habitats and livelihoods. Areas along Georgia's almost 310 kilometres of coastline are starting to feel the effects of river waste water that is originating from the activity of more than 170 million people who live alongside the many rivers that feed the Black Sea. Discharge of insufficiently treated sewage, widespread eutrophication, infiltration of animal manure and land erosion have resulted in large-scale microbiological and other contamination.

It is also damaging the country's tourism industry and is posing significant human health risks to those living in coastal areas. .

Black Sea OUTLOOK Conference - NOV 2011 - ENVIRONMENTAL DATA COLLECTION WITHIN THE BLACK SEA COMMISSION STATUS, CHALLENGES, SOLU. KLASSA 05/02/12 Bulgaria joins the fight against oil spills in the Black Sea. ”The European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) will deploy a specialised ship for fighting against oil spills in the Bulgarian part of the Black Sea,” posted the Press office of the Ministry of Transport. This was possible after Bulgaria’s membership in the EMSA, stated the report of the Executive Agency Maritime Administration (EAMA) for 2011. So far, the only ship in charge of this type of operations was based near the Romanian Black Sea coast. A tender procurement procedure was called for the deployment of a second ship, and Bulgarian companies and firms from the EU participated in it. After the tender, a contract was signed for the launching of a ship with specialised oil spill response equipment, based in Bulgaria. GRREPORTER 15/06/11 Black Sea is polluting the air in Athens. Photo: ethnos.gr Athens is surrounded by sources of air pollutants that fill its atmosphere, along with the pollution from the city. The dust from the Sahara desert is not the only factor that aggravates the atmosphere in the Greek capital. According to a recent research, Athens is located in the middle of the range of air pollutants that are produced in large urban centres such as Istanbul, the Black Sea region, neighbouring countries on the Balkan peninsula, the industrial zone in northern Italy as well as the urban and industrial centres of Central and Western Europe, but to a much lesser extent. The data for carried pollutants were reported by the National Observatory of Athens within the research program CITYZEN-FP7 and published in the online edition of Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics.

The findings are based on research held from January 2006 to December 2008.
