PLOS 20/03/15 The Mediterranean and Black Sea Fisheries at Risk from Overexploitation. Abstract The status of the Mediterranean and Black Sea fisheries was evaluated for the period 1970-2010 on a subarea basis, using various indicators including the temporal variability of total landings, the number of recorded stocks, the mean trophic level of the catch, the fishing-in-balance index and the catch-based method of stock classification.

All indicators confirmed that the fisheries resources of the Mediterranean and Black Sea are at risk from overexploitation. The pattern of exploitation and the state of stocks differed among the western (W), central (C) and eastern (E) Mediterranean subareas and the Black Sea (BS), with the E Mediterranean and BS fisheries being in a worst shape. . « Nous n’avions jamais analysé autant de molécules jusqu’à présent », précise Jaroslav Slobodnik.

They both build up giant scientific databases of ecosystems around the World. But it is a tricky process. This is the story of how researchers around the Black Sea are struggling to get the bigger picture out of tiny details. On the shores of the Danube River there is an unusual team. Romanian and Ukranian scientists are embarking on a common research trip. They are assessing the hydrological and biological health of the Danube Delta, a huge Biosphere Reserve shared by both countries. “Algae blooming is decreasing. Less industrial discharges and more efficient water treatment plants are indeed improving water quality in the Danube Delta.

Iulian Michersu, Geographer with the Danube Delta Research Institute says: “The Danube has now many dams and dikes. Challenges are similar on the Delta’s Ukranian side. The Black Sea is a closed basin which is connected to Aegean Sea through Bosporus and Dardanel Straits: The basin is encircled with six countries from which major rivers Danube, Dniester, Dnieper, Yeşilirmak, Kizilirmak and Sakarya run through to the sea, which carry and discharge pollution from industrial, agricultural and domestic sources to Black Sea Basin that grows cumulatively.

Pollution in Turkey’s two straits has reached critical levels and immediate measures should be taken by Turkey as well as the international community, according to Halit Kuşku, professor of aquaculture at Çanakkale 18 Mart University.

NEWS PANO 11/04/12 Experts express growing concern over marine pollution in Turkey

Kuşku has warned that the pollution in Turkey’s two straits -- İstanbul’s Bosporus Strait, connecting the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara, and the Dardanelles, a strait in the northwestern province of Çanakkale connecting the Aegean Sea to the Sea of Marmara -- are suffering from severe pollution and high levels of toxicity. Explaining the causes of the pollution, Kuşku said: “The Black Sea is an inland sea, and so it is not able to cleanse itself from the pollution that comes from Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, Hungary and Russia. The Black Sea and the creatures in it have been ruined by oil tankers, sewage, industrial and chemical waste and radioactive material from nuclear power plants.
