Agroecology of Indian cotton and PBW Using the analysis path illustrated in Fig. 4, we unpack the Indian cotton system and explore the bioeconomic links to cotton farmer suicides.

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES EUROPE 20/10/20 Bio-economics of Indian hybrid Bt cotton and farmer suicides

We first examine cotton at Yavatmal, Maharashtra, India in the heartland of high farmer suicides, to develop an initial understanding of the Indian cotton system, and then we conduct a regional analysis across five states of south-central India. The model computes the full daily age-mass structured dynamics of cotton for all locations (see Additional file 1: S3), but only summary annual statistics are reported here. A robust model to predict initiation of winter dormancy in PBW in response to temperature and photoperiod, and of diapause termination in spring proved critical (Additional file 1: S4, Fig. S9) [36]. Yavatmal, Maharashtra, India In the state of Maharashtra, the majority of cottons are long-season varieties planted at low densities (~ 2.5 plants m−2). The seeds were introduced in India in 2002 and today account for 90% of all cotton planting in the country. Bt cotton is now the most widely planted GM crop on small farms in the developing world. In India, Bt cotton is the most widely planted cotton crop by acreage, and it is hugely controversial. Supporters long touted increased yields and reduced pesticides to justify its pickup. COTTON ASSOCIATION OF INDIA 17/07/18 Bt Cotton in India - Current Scenario. NATURE 30/01/19 Indian court’s decision to uphold GM cotton patent could boost industry research. Some scientists in India have welcomed a supreme court ruling that reinstates a patent on genetically modified cotton that had been quashed by a lower court.

They say the decision to uphold the intellectual-property rights of seed maker Monsanto could help reverse a decline in biotechnology research in agriculture in the country. “Publicly funded science in this broad area can now be assured of protection of its intellectual property,” says government science adviser Krishnaswamy VijayRaghavan, who is based in New Delhi. “Indian agriculture and other biotech scientists should feel encouraged to innovate further.” In a long-running battle over intellectual protection for genetically modified (GM) crops in India, the 8 January decision from the country’s highest court is seen as a win for research-focused seed companies such as Monsanto (bought last year by Bayer of Germany) that want protection for their transgenic technology.

In particular, concerns have been raised about the performance of transgenic crops in developing counties in terms of their environmental, health, and social effects. This study addresses some of these research gaps by analyzing the effects of insect-resistant transgenic cotton in India, building on several years of data. Key words: Bt cotton, transgenic crops, pesticides, adoption, yield, farm income, panel data. EXTRACTS: What is surprising is why the elite Bikaneri Narma, a popular variety cultivated in Punjab, Rajasthan and Haryana, should have failed so badly when it was genetically modified. Array.

FIBRE FASHION 08/02/12 Rajasthan govt to promote Bt cotton cultivation. Intending to boost domestic Bt cotton production, the Rajasthan government is planning to adopt several measures like distributing free certified seeds to the farmers in the tribal region in the southern part of the State, including Udaipur, and also to provide training to them.

The State government intends to encourage the farmers as well as tribals, particularly in Udaipur and surrounding regions like Kotda, Malvi, Jhadol, Kherwada, Vallabhnagar and Salumber to undertake cultivation of Bt cotton in order to check migration of child labour from Rajasthan. State Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister Mahendrajeet Singh Malviya, while addressing several NGO representatives and State government officials during a programme on child labour, said people have been migrating from Rajasthan to other States like Gujarat or other countries in search of livelihood, which has always remained a matter of concern.
