Without stringent and appropriate control measures, the impact of these pathogens can often be significant, writes Andy Shinn, Fish Vet Group, Thailand, et al. Estimating the true impact of each parasite event, however, is complicated as costs may be affected by a diverse assortment of environmental and management factors and can range from direct losses in production to the more indirect costs of longer term control and management of infections and the wider, downstream socio-economic impacts on livelihoods and satellite industries associated with the primary producer.

PARAFISHCONTROL - New Project Aims to Develop Advanced Tools and Research Strategies for Parasite Control in European Farmed Fish. ParaFishControl is a new €8.1 million EU Horizon 2020-funded research project that aims to improve our understanding of fish-parasite interactions and develop innovative solutions and tools to prevent, control and mitigate harmful parasites which affect the main fish species farmed in Europe (Atlantic salmon, rainbow trout, common carp, turbot, European sea bass, and gilthead sea bream).
Aquaculture is the fastest growing food producing sector worldwide, currently providing half of all fish for human food. Fish disease prevention and management are essential for the sustainability of the aquaculture industry. ParaFishControl aims to improve the productivity, economic performance and image of European aquaculture through improved biosecurity, health and welfare of farmed fish. Dr Ariadna Sitjà-Bobadilla, ParaFishControl project coordinator, explains: “This project is very timely, as parasitic diseases constitute a key constraint for sustainable finfish aquaculture in Europe. The aim of this study was to identify mucin gene sequences of gilthead sea bream (GSB), to determine its pattern of distribution in fish tissues and to analyse their transcriptional regulation by dietary and pathogenic factors. Exhaustive search of fish mucins was done in GSB after de novo assembly of next-generation sequencing data hosted in the IATS transcriptome database (www.nutrigroup-iats.org/seabreamdb). Six sequences, three categorized as putative membrane-bound mucins and three putative secreted-gel forming mucins, were identified.
The transcriptional tissue screening revealed that Muc18 was the predominant mucin in skin, gills and stomach of GSB. BOURNEMOUTH UNIVERSITY 17/05/12 Parasite infects UK coarse fish (Sphaerothecum destruens) Date: 17 May 2012 Lab tests carried out by researchers at Bournemouth University (BU) have shown UK carp, bream and roach are all susceptible to infection by the deadly parasite Sphaerothecum destruens, better known as the Rosette Agent. The research published in PLoS ONE journal showed death rates in bream exceeding 50% with 75% of bream being infected. Carp and roach showed a lower level of susceptibility, although the parasite prevalence was still as high as 20%. Given that BU researchers have already found the Rosette Agent in one wild UK fish population, the risk of spread to these vulnerable coarse fish is high.

Study: Global Warming Changes Balance Between Parasite And Host In Fish LEICESTER, England -- Parasitic worms that infect fish, and have a devastating effect on fish reproduction, grow four times faster at higher temperatures – providing some of the first evidence that global warming affects the interactions between parasites and their hosts.
The study from the University of Leicester revealed that global warming had the potential to change the balance between parasite and host - with potentially serious implications for fish populations. The researchers from the University of Leicester's Department of Biology also observed behavioral change in infected fish – suggesting parasites may manipulate host behaviour to make them seek out warmer temperatures.
