Without stringent and appropriate control measures, the impact of these pathogens can often be significant, writes Andy Shinn, Fish Vet Group, Thailand, et al. Estimating the true impact of each parasite event, however, is complicated as costs may be affected by a diverse assortment of environmental and management factors and can range from direct losses in production to the more indirect costs of longer term control and management of infections and the wider, downstream socio-economic impacts on livelihoods and satellite industries associated with the primary producer.

PARAFISHCONTROL - New Project Aims to Develop Advanced Tools and Research Strategies for Parasite Control in European Farmed Fish. ParaFishControl is a new €8.1 million EU Horizon 2020-funded research project that aims to improve our understanding of fish-parasite interactions and develop innovative solutions and tools to prevent, control and mitigate harmful parasites which affect the main fish species farmed in Europe (Atlantic salmon, rainbow trout, common carp, turbot, European sea bass, and gilthead sea bream).

Aquaculture is the fastest growing food producing sector worldwide, currently providing half of all fish for human food. Fish disease prevention and management are essential for the sustainability of the aquaculture industry. ParaFishControl aims to improve the productivity, economic performance and image of European aquaculture through improved biosecurity, health and welfare of farmed fish. Dr Ariadna Sitjà-Bobadilla, ParaFishControl project coordinator, explains: “This project is very timely, as parasitic diseases constitute a key constraint for sustainable finfish aquaculture in Europe. Parasites attach beneath scales of fish, which may affect treatment efficacy. Parasite larvae settled randomly and migrated to preferred microhabitats on the host. The eyes, fins, upper and ventral body surfaces were preferred by the parasite. Neobenedenia sp. aggregated on the fins prior to sexual maturity. The aim of this study was to identify mucin gene sequences of gilthead sea bream (GSB), to determine its pattern of distribution in fish tissues and to analyse their transcriptional regulation by dietary and pathogenic factors. Exhaustive search of fish mucins was done in GSB after de novo assembly of next-generation sequencing data hosted in the IATS transcriptome database (www.nutrigroup-iats.org/seabreamdb). Six sequences, three categorized as putative membrane-bound mucins and three putative secreted-gel forming mucins, were identified.

The transcriptional tissue screening revealed that Muc18 was the predominant mucin in skin, gills and stomach of GSB. Fish were reared in indoor tanks supplied with ground water. The fish were free of D. pseudospathaceum infection. Mean fish fork length ± s.e. was 91.5 ± 8.62 mm (Experiment 1) and 93.8 ± 8.26 mm (Experiment 2). The mean body lengths were not significantly different between 'groups’ and 'solitary fish’ treatments. BOURNEMOUTH UNIVERSITY 17/05/12 Parasite infects UK coarse fish (Sphaerothecum destruens) Date: 17 May 2012 Lab tests carried out by researchers at Bournemouth University (BU) have shown UK carp, bream and roach are all susceptible to infection by the deadly parasite Sphaerothecum destruens, better known as the Rosette Agent. The research published in PLoS ONE journal showed death rates in bream exceeding 50% with 75% of bream being infected. Carp and roach showed a lower level of susceptibility, although the parasite prevalence was still as high as 20%. Given that BU researchers have already found the Rosette Agent in one wild UK fish population, the risk of spread to these vulnerable coarse fish is high.

SCIENCE ALERT 19/10/12 Isolation, Identification and Prevalence of Parasites on Oreochromis niloticus from Three Selected River. Fish is a food consumed by many species, including humans, the word fish refers to both the animal and to the food prepared from it. Three quarter of the earth surface is covered by water, so fish has been an important part of the diets of human in almost all continents of the world. Fish is a cheap and important source of protein; it contains lipids, minerals and vitamins.

Fish occupies several different levels of the aquatic food chain and makes up more than 40% of the world vertebrate species. Fish interacts with the various levels of food chain and influence the structures of lakes, streams and estuaries since, they are usually restricted to a particular mode of life related to their food source and reproductive requirement. In order to draw patterns in helminth parasite composition and species richness in Mexican freshwater fishes we analyse a presence-absence matrix representing every species of adult helminth parasites of freshwater fishes from 23 Mexican hydrological basins. We examine the distributional patterns of the helminth parasites with regard to the main hydrological basins of the country, and in doing so we identify areas of high diversity and point out the biotic similarities and differences among drainage basins.

Our dataset allows us to evaluate the relationships among drainage basins in terms of helminth diversity. Figures. UNDERWATERTIMES 06/12/11 Study: Global Warming Changes Balance Between Parasite And Host In Fish. Study: Global Warming Changes Balance Between Parasite And Host In Fish LEICESTER, England -- Parasitic worms that infect fish, and have a devastating effect on fish reproduction, grow four times faster at higher temperatures – providing some of the first evidence that global warming affects the interactions between parasites and their hosts.

The study from the University of Leicester revealed that global warming had the potential to change the balance between parasite and host - with potentially serious implications for fish populations. The researchers from the University of Leicester's Department of Biology also observed behavioral change in infected fish – suggesting parasites may manipulate host behaviour to make them seek out warmer temperatures. And they discovered that whilst parasites grew faster in higher temperatures, the host's growth rate slowed. INTECH 11/04/12 Fighting Virus and Parasites with Fish Cytotoxic Cells. [HANOI] Controlling populations of unwanted snails on fish farms plays a "crucial role" in reducing parasite prevalence and making raw fish safer to eat, a study has found.

Certain species of snails are key hosts of fish parasites called trematodes, which are classed as an emerging infectious disease that infects millions of people around the world though consumption of undercooked fish. Snails are a key source of fish- and human-infecting parasitesFish infections are found to be around 11 times higher in ponds with lots of snailsCutting snail numbers may help cut fish infections Researchers from Denmark and Vietnam wanted to quantify the relationship between snail density and the infection levels in farmed fish to help assess whether intervention against snails in ponds would be sufficient to control infections in fish.
