Brunner, Sascha "Remy" (2019) Probiotics in fish aquaculture: The cure against parasitic diseases? Master's Thesis / Essay, Marine Biology. Fish is an attractive source of protein, especially in regions where agricultural practises are limited. Aquaculture has emerged as a promising enterprise to keep up with the increasing demand for high-quality protein-rich food in an ever-growing human world population.
With increasing intensiveness of the practise, stress levels in animals are also increasing. High levels of stress can lead to high susceptibility to parasitic diseases (diseases caused or transmitted by parasites) such as Ich/White Spot Disease caused by Ichthyphtirius multifiliis, Dactylogyrosis caused by gill fluke (Dactylogyrus sp.) and saprolegniasis caused by parasitic heterokonts including the genus Saprolegnia sp. Parasitic diseases have been notoriously challenging to treat because of the different parasite life stages and similarity to the host organism.

Even though the resolution of host–parasite interactions has improved during the last decade, there remain unresolved key issues, including the degree to which innate or adaptive immune mechanisms are involved. Fish have a highly evolved innate immune response and a more primitive adaptive response compared with mammals, and exactly why fish hosts are susceptible or resistant and how they develop memory remains a question of interest that involves many unresolved mechanisms. FOOD SAFETY NEWS 23/03/20 Scientists find evidence of huge increase in parasitic worms found in raw seafood dishes. The next time you eat sashimi, nigiri or other forms of raw fish, you should consider doing a quick check for worms, according to a team of researchers.
A new study led by scientists at the University of Washington found “dramatic increases in the abundance of a worm that can be transmitted to humans who eat raw or undercooked seafood.” “Its 283-fold increase in abundance since the 1970s could have implications for the health of humans and marine mammals, which both can inadvertently eat the worm,” according to a report on the scientists’ work. They looked at a parasitic worm, known as Anisakis or “herring worm.” Their’s is the first study to combine the results of previous research to investigate how the global abundance of these worms has changed through time.
“It’s interesting because it shows how risks to both humans and marine mammals are changing over time. The worms can be up to 2 centimeters in length, about as long as a nickel is wide. UNIVERSITE DE BORDEAUX 29/10/18 Thèse en ligne : Inventory, dynamics and impact of the trematodes parasites in bivalves with high economic importance. Abstract : Among population dynamics drivers, parasitism is significant but often neglected. Beyond inventory of the various parasites, it is urgent to understand the susceptibility of hosts, namely bivalves, to infection, and to investigate the interaction among parasites and other environmental conditions. In this way, the present study aimed to characterize and quantify the trematode macroparasites, the most abundant and prevalent in coastal waters, infecting Cerastoderma edule and Donax trunculus, which are among the most ecologically important and economically explored bivalve species in Portugal and France. The first step was to study bivalve population dynamics, evaluating the relationship between temperature and recruitment timing and the reciprocal effects of recruitment on adult biomass.
For this, a large database spanning 17 years of monthly observations of a cockle population inhabiting a national protected area (Banc d’Arguin, Arcachon, France) was analysed. Sva_se 27/10/17 Programme de recherche 2017-2019 - Detection and control of parasitic infections in farmed fish.
Published 2017-10-27 This is a joint project with Uppsala University, where prof Staffan Svärd is the principal applicant. Infections are well-known problems in fish farming, involving viruses, bacteria and parasites. Spironucleus salmonicida is a parasitic microbe known to cause severe systemic infections, spironucleosis, in farmed salmonids. Treatment is currently not possible, making studies of diagnostic, drug and vaccine targets important.
We will start with a detailed characterization of host and parasite responses during S. salmonicida infection in live salmonids, using experimental infections. This will be complemented by studies of gene expression changes in host cells and parasites during early stages of S. salmonicida infection of cultured salmon cells in vitro. The project will generate tools to follow and control spironucleosis in wild and farmed fish. SCIENTIFIC REPORTS 26/03/19 Parasite detection in the ornamental fish trade using environmental DNA. Neobenedenia girellae and Z. arugamensis could be recovered from fish without destructive sampling. Therefore, all fish used in these challenge experiments were returned to their original holding area after experimentation. Cryptocaryon irritans is a subcutaneous fish parasite but also infests the gill tissue. For accurate counts on fish it was therefore necessary to humanely euthanase all fish in the C. irritans challenges using an anaesthetic overdose of 2-Phenoxyethanol at 1.5 ml/L for 10 minutes50 prior to sampling.

PHYS_ORG 23/08/18 Fish lice could be early indicators of metal pollution in freshwater. Everyone needs safe and clean water to drink. Yet industry, agriculture and urban activities threaten fresh water. In particular, metal pollution can be very hard to detect early. Because of this, scientists are always searching for sensitive indicators of water quality.
Now, a fish louse shows great promise as an early indicator for monitoring pollution in rivers and dams. Living creatures tell a more complete story Water samples only tell the story of a river for a moment in time. So researchers studied fish, because fish accumulate pollutants such as metals over time. "Fish have mechanisms to protect themselves. "Also, if the fish have parasites, the parasites can accumulate the metals better than the fish. "In a way, the parasites absorb the metals from the fish. "This means we can measure metals in them, long before it is possible to do that in fish or in water samples.

J Vet Pharmacol Ther. 2019 Mar;42(2):139-153. Use of praziquantel to control platyhelminth parasites of fish. Fish are common definitive and intermediate hosts for a variety of parasitic flatworms. In unstressed wild populations, parasitic infections often go unnoticed and are perceived to represent a lesser threat to fish health. In contrast, platyhelminth parasitism of captive fish often results in decreased weight gain and increased mortality which often necessitates chemotherapeutic treatment.
The presence of platyhelminth parasites in fish tissues is not only unappealing but in some cases also represents a threat to human health. In veterinary medicine, one of the most commonly used agents with anti‐flatworm activity is praziquantel; yet, no praziquantel products are labeled for use in fish in the United States. Veterinarians may use praziquantel preparations approved for other vertebrate species under the Animal Medicinal Drug Use Clarification Act (AMDUCA).
