Previously, she worked at West Town Farm, an organic mixed farm enterprise on the outskirts of Exeter, and 10:10, an organisation that encourages schools and businesses to cut carbon emissions. It’s one of two pieces of work that’s had me endeavouring (and failing) to learn the art of patience in 2016 so I’m so thrilled we can now unveil our plans for the agroforestry field.

In an earlier report, den Herder et al (2015) reviewed literature sources to provide a preliminary estimate of the extent of agroforestry in Europe. That report (which collected only limited data from such countries) estimated that agroforestry extends to at least 10.6 million hectares in Europe. By contrast the CORINE land cover survey gives an “agroforestry” classification to 3.3 million ha in Europe. EUROPEAN FOREST INSTITUTE 11/05/15 Agroforestry more widespread in Europe than estimated (rapport en ligne) A recent study led by EFI researcher Michael den Herder suggests that agroforestry in Europe occupies at least 10.6 million hectares.
This value represents about 6.5% of the utilised agricultural area in Europe and is substantially more than the 3.3 million hectares categorised as “agroforestry” by the CORINE Land Cover classification. In the FP7 funded project AGFORWARD , agroforestry is defined as the practice of deliberately integrating woody vegetation (trees or shrubs) with crop and/or animal production systems to benefit from the ecological and economic interactions. It can occur at field-, farm- or landscape-scales. Among the best know examples of agroforestry are wood pastures in the Mediterranean (Spanish dehesa and Portuguese montado), which cover about 4.6 million hectares.
